Ole Miss Scores Eight in the Second En Route to Run-Rule Win
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (31-11) scored in every inning on Tuesday, including eight runs in the second as the Rebels needed just five innings to blow by UT Martin (25-20) by a 13-0 margin in a midweek game at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
Six different Rebels drove in at least one run, while 10 different Rebels crossed the plate in a game that was decided early. Abbey Latham went 2-for-3 with a walk, posting a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Kylan Becker reached in all three plate appearances, coming in to score each time.
While Ava Tillmann and Savannah Diederich received plenty of run support, the first run of the game would have been enough for the duo as they stifled the Skyhawks all game long. Tillmann earned her seventh win after tossing three shutout innings with two hits allowed. Diederich came in for the final two frames, with a Rebel error the only damage done against her.
After whetting their appetite with a Jessica Puk sacrifice fly in the first to score Becker, the Rebels blew the doors off the game in the second. Ole Miss batted around, scoring eight runs on five hits and three Skyhawk errors to put the game out of reach early.
Mikayla Allee got things started in the second with a sacrifice fly to plate pinch runner Kelsha Loftin, reaching on a muffed catch at first base. Becker reached on an error in the next at-bat, allowing Amanda Roth to come home and Latham followed with a single to right-center to bring Allee in from third. After a bunt single from Puk scored Becker, Brittany Finney rocketed a double to the wall to plate a pair and push the lead to 6-0.
The Rebels were still not done. The inning was extended when Kaylee Horton's pop up was dropped by the UTM catcher and with the bases juiced Autumn Gillespie took advantage, sneaking a line drive inside the right field line for a bases-clearing triple. By the time things had wrapped up in the second, the Rebels had themselves a 9-0 lead.
Two more Skyhawk errors in the third and fourth allowed a pair of runs to come home for Ole Miss in both innings and with a 13-run cushion, Diederich collected three quick outs in the fifth to close out the run-rule victory.
Ole Miss now turns its attention to the annual showdown with in-state rival Mississippi State. The Rebels and Bulldogs will face off in a three-game series in Starkville Thursday through Saturday, with Friday's ballgame airing on the SEC Network at 5 p.m CT.
