Suber Places Second Individually After Final Round 65

WEST POINT, Miss. – The Ole Miss men's golf team wrapped up play at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship on Tuesday, finishing runner-up as a team after a final round 3-under 285. Jackson Suber led the Rebels with a runner-up individual finish after a final round 7-under 65, a career low for the freshman.

Entering the day in third eight strokes behind ULM and one stroke back of No. 4 Vanderbilt, Ole Miss finished ahead of the Commodores and Mississippi State to beat a pair of SEC schools. The Rebels caught up with ULM down the stretch, tying the tournament leaders with one group left on the course. However, ULM's Otto Van Buynder made a five footer for birdie on No. 18 to give the Warhawks the tournament title at 18-under (278-276-292—846).

The Rebels led the field in total birdies with 56 and gained 25 strokes off the par 5's in their final tune-up before the SEC Championship. For the second day in a row, Ole Miss owned the par-5 ninth hole, going 4-under as a team that moved them into second place ahead of No. 4 Vanderbilt going into the final nine.

"The guys showed a lot of fight today," head coach Chris Malloy said. "We didn't get off to the greatest of starts, but we really started getting some momentum going into the back nine. We unfortunately finished one shot short, didn't quite get it done, but I was proud of what I saw especially after our last time out. Our guys showed up and gave everything they had."

Suber fired a career-best 65 (-7) in the final round, tying the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship record. The freshman went bogey-free, tallying five birdies and one eagle. After three birdies on the front nine, the eagle on the par 5 10th hole got him to 5-under. Suber added two more birdies on 14 and 16 to cap off a remarkable final 18 to earn his second career runner-up finish at 10-under for the tournament. It was the best round by an Ole Miss golfer in the tournament, besting a 66 by Rebel pro Braden Thornberry in last year's final round as well as teammate Beau Briggs' 66 yesterday.

The Tampa, Florida, native led the team with 14 birdies and went 7-under on the par 5's, which was second in the field. Suber went 70-71-65 to tie a career-low 54-hole score of 206 for the third top-five of his freshman campaign.

"Everything was going well out there, especially the putter," Suber said. "I kept the ball in front of me and didn't make any bad shots. I played solid golf the first two rounds but was lights out today. I made a lot of long putts and got a lot of shots close, which leads to no bogeys. This runner-up finish will give us a chip on our shoulder to go win next week."

Briggs finished tied for fifth individually after a final round 1-under 71. The senior was consistent all week, going 7-under (72-66-71—209) over 54 holes and tying for the team lead in birdies with 14 alongside Suber. He notched his third top-five showing of the season and fourth of his career.

Jack Gnam put together a career tournament, playing at level par (69-72-75) and ending tied for 26th, a career-best finish. Gnam's first round 3-under 69 was a career-low. The freshman went 7-under on the par 5's and led the team in pars with 39 over 54 holes.

Cecil Wegener finished tied for 36th after a final round 2-over 74. The sophomore put together a bogey-free front nine with a birdie at No. 2 to go along with eight pars before making the turn. Wegener dominated the par-5 second, playing the hole 4-under through three rounds.

Ole Miss will look to take momentum from the runner-up performance into next week. The Rebels return to the course April 24-28 for the SEC Championship in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
