Rebels Will Compete Against Rest of SEC at Sea Island Golf Club
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Ole Miss men's golf team heads to St. Simons Island, Georgia for the SEC Championship beginning Wednesday (April 24). The Rebels will battle the 13 other schools from the Southeastern Conference at Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course, which has hosted the conference championship the past 19 years.
The 2019 event will mark the third consecutive in which the championship will extend to match play on Saturday and Sunday. Both of the past two seasons, the Rebels have advanced to the match play portion of the tournament. Three rounds of stroke play will occur the opening three days of the championship. The final match on Sunday will be televised live on SEC Network.
The Rebels are getting hot at the right time, having finished runner-up at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship a week ago finishing ahead of SEC foe Vanderbilt.
"This group is excited to get over to Sea Island and kick off our postseason run," head coach Chris Malloy said. "Each of these guys is familiar with this course and has confidence with this layout. They should have some confidence after last week's event, and I really believe that we will start to peak at the right time of our season."
The lineup is staying the same after the runner-up finish last week. Jackson Suber will be in the No. 1 position, followed by Beau Briggs, Cecil Wegener, Josh Seiple and Jack Gnam.
Suber comes into the conference championship as the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week after finishing runner-up individually at Old Waverly, his second runner-up finish of the season. His three-day total of 206 (-10) tied his career low, which included a tournament-best 65 (-7) in the final round. The Tampa, Florida, native ranks sixth in the conference for stroke average among freshman (72.36) and has four top-10 finishes this season.
Briggs ranks top 15 in the conference in stroke average (71.5) and is coming off a top-5 showing at Old Waverly. He posted 7-under over the three rounds, including a 66 (-6) that tied his career low. The senior has saved his best golf for last and is looking to improve upon tying for 46th a year ago during stroke play.
Wegener finished runner-up in his conference championship debut last year. Then a freshman, he led the Rebels to match play with three rounds at par-or-better during stroke play (70-65-70). Wegener shared medalist honors through 54 holes before falling in a playoff for the individual title.
Seiple tied for 26th at last year's event at Sea Island. As a junior, he fired a second round 65, which was a key counting score to the Rebels match play hopes.
Gnam is making his SEC Championship debut with Suber. The Mississippi native had a career week last week at Old Waverly, where he put together his best finish of his freshman campaign, tying for 26th with a career-low 3-under 69 in the first round.
First round of stroke play is set to get underway Wednesday morning with tee times for the Rebels beginning at 8 a.m. CT. Ole Miss will be paired with players from Kentucky and Florida.
