Rebels Battle Tough Conditions, Shoot Final Round 304
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Ole Miss men's golf team fought hard throughout the third round of the SEC Championship but came up two spots short of advancing to match play.
Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course showed its teeth today, with steady winds throughout the final round up to 25 miles per hour on the ocean-side holes.
Ole Miss shot a final round 24-over 304 to finish with a three-day total of 862 (+22).
"It's been a long three days," Ole Miss head coach Chris Malloy said. "We've had some good, some okay, and some bad. Unfortunately, today we weren't very good, especially in the middle part of our round. We just have to be a little bit better, and for some of these young guys on the team this was their first experience in postseason."
"The wind kicking up made for some tough conditions but we're going to see a lot of that down the road, probably in the NCAA Tournament and NCAA Championship," Malloy said. "We need to learn from it and be better."
Jack Gnam was the top finisher for the Rebels in his conference championship debut. The freshman tied for 16th, a career-best finish, after a final round 4-over 74. Gnam led the team in pars with 37 in 54 holes, and had the lone eagle for Ole Miss the past three days, holing out from the fairway on the par 4 2nd hole today.
Jackson Suber finished in 34th individually. The freshman was second on the team in birdies with eight and a second round 65 tied his career-low round for the season.
Cecil Wegener moved into the top-40 overall after a final round 3-over 73. The sophomore had the low round on Friday for the Rebels, and led the team in birdies throughout the week with 10.
Beau Briggs finished tied for 46th following an 8-over 78 today. The senior was second in the field in par 5 scoring on the week, going 4-under. Fellow senior Josh Seiple shot a 79 today to finish 62nd.
The Rebels will learn their postseason fate during the NCAA Men's Golf Championships selection show set for Wednesday, May 1 at 8 p.m. CT. It will be live on Golf Channel's Golf Central and streamed live on the Golf Channel website.
