Men’s Golf Set for NCAA Stanford Regional

5/12/2019 | Men's Golf

STANFORD, Calif. – The Ole Miss men's golf team heads to California for the NCAA Stanford Regional beginning on Monday (May 13) on the par-70 Stanford Golf Course.

It's the third straight season and 12th time overall Ole Miss has earned a bid to the NCAA Division I Golf Championships, and the fourth time in five years during head coach Chris Malloy's tenure.

Joining the Rebels out west will be top-seeded No. 2 Arizona State, No. 12 Stanford, No. 14 LSU, No. 24 NC State, No. 26 North Carolina, No. 36 South Florida, No. 38 Kansas, No. 47 Virginia, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Augusta and Denver. The Rebels have seen all but four of the teams during competition this season.

The top-5 teams that can best Stanford Golf Course will advance to the NCAA Championship, held May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

"Stanford's course will be a great challenge for each of the teams competing this week," Malloy said. "We have to be patient, and finding fairways will be a premium to shooting a good score."

The lineup consists of Jackson Suber, who will be in the No. 1 position, followed by Sarut VongchaisitJack Gnam, Cecil Wegener and Josh Seiple.

"I know that this group is ready to get back into postseason play and continue to build on the momentum that they have built over the last two events," Malloy said. "They have fought through a lot this semester and should be battle tested for what lies ahead of us."

Suber occupies the one spot for the second straight event. The freshman shot a career-low 65 in the second round of the SEC Championship and has four top-10's this season, leading the team.

Vongchaisit will see his first action since the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship (April 15-16) where he notched a top-50 finish individually. The freshman was SEC Freshman of the Week twice this spring.

Gnam will be making his NCAA debut alongside Suber and Vongchaisit. The freshman had a career showing at the SEC Championship just two weeks ago, finishing tied for 16th thanks to a second round 67, a career-low.

Wegener finished tied for 35th in his NCAA Regional debut last season, the second-highest finish for the Rebels at the Bryan Regional. The sophomore turned in an under-par round (71) on the final day.

Seiple is the only Rebel to turn in a top-10 finish in California this season. The senior finished tied for 10th at the Lamkin San Diego Classic in early March, with the help of two under-par rounds (71-74-71—216).

The first round begins Monday morning with tee times for the Rebels starting at 11:25 a.m. CT. Ole Miss will be paired with Kansas and Virginia.
