Ole Miss Claimed Titles in the Women’s 100-Meter Dash and 4x100-Meter Relay
AUBURN, Ala. – Ole Miss track & field wrapped up its busy weekend with event victories in the women's 100-meter dash and women's 4x100-meter relay at Day Two of the War Eagle Invite at Auburn on Saturday afternoon.
Leading the charge for Ole Miss was freshman Brandee Presley, who earned the Rebels' lone individual victory of the day with a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.61). Fellow freshman Kelly Rowe also competed in the race and placed sixth at 11.85.
Presley and Rowe, along with freshman Jayda Eckford and junior Kaira Simmons, also finished first in the women's 4x100-meter relay at 44.39 – the eighth-fastest time in Rebel history. This quartet had previously entered the Ole Miss record book at the Spec Towns Invite at Georgia earlier this month, when they finished in 44.18 for the sixth-best performance all-time. Entering this weekend, that 4x100-meter relay time registered as the top-ranked performance for the Rebel women this season at No. 18 in the NCAA and No. 11 in the East Region.
The Rebel men also competed in the 4x100-meter relay and brought home a fifth-place finish. The squad, consisting of Andrew Raspo, Jaqaun Webb, Kenney Broadnax and Elijah Dryer ran a season-best time of 40.38, which is a full 0.2 seconds ahead of their previous best mark this year.
Although there was no heptathlon this weekend, Kieshonna Brooks still competed in three events and had some great performances. Her best mark came in the long jump, where she set a PR for the second straight week and finished second overall at 6.18m (20-03.50). This jump ranks ninth in school history, 10th in the SEC, 19th in the NCAA East Region and 38th in the nation. The junior also competed in the 100-meter hurdles and finished third with a time of 13.79. She rounded out competition with a 13th place finish in the 200-meter dash at a personal best time of 24.52.
Ole Miss also had success in both the men's and women's pole vault. Peyton Weissmann once again led the Rebel men. The sophomore, who currently ranks No. 1 in the SEC, No. 4 in the NCAA East Region and No. 14 in the NCAA, placed second after clearing 5.24m (17-02.25). Junior Cole Colozzo finished third in the event at 5.00m (16-04.75).
Senior Lindsey Murray saw her streak of consecutive pole vault victories come to end, but she still had a solid showing in fourth-place at 3.80m (12-05.50). Junior Nicole Kallenberger also competed, finishing seventh at 3.65m (11-11.75).
Ole Miss also had solid performances in the men's long jump and women's high jump. Manny Foster had his best meet of 2019, leaping 7.40m (24-03.50) to finish second overall, while Demond Fleming placed eighth, setting a PR at 6.75m (22-01.75).
Ghania Warren, fresh off of a PR last week, placed second in the women's high jump at 1.66m (5-05.25). Hannah LoChiatto also competed in the event, tying her PR in seventh place at 1.61m (5-03.25).
Today's performances cap a long weekend for the Rebels, who were spread out across three meets on opposite ends of the country. In total, Ole Miss added 10 more times or marks into the NCAA top-50 in competition this week at Auburn and at the Bryan Clay Invite and Mt. SAC Relays out in California.
"We had a very competitive weekend on the west coast and at Auburn with some good performances coming out as a result," said OIe Miss head coach Connie Price-Smith. "We had school records, personal bests and seasonal bests all around, which is exactly what you want out of your team as you start closing in on the conference meet. Next week we have one last chance to sharpen up at LSU before we head to Arkansas for the SEC Championships."
Ole Miss returns to action next weekend for the LSU Invite, which will take place Saturday, April 27. This meet will mark the last regular season competition for the Rebels as championship season begins with the SEC Outdoor Championships from May 9-11 at Arkansas.
