Waleed Suliman Ran the NCAA’s No. 6 and SEC’s No. 1 Time in the 1500-Meter
AZUSA, Calif. – Ole Miss track & field excelled at three different meets across the country on Friday, with the Rebel distance runners putting on a show in California at the Bryan Clay Invite and Mt. SAC Relays, while the Ole Miss throwers got the War Eagle Invite off to a strong start at Auburn.
BRYAN CLAY INVITE • Azusa, Calif.
Nearly one year to the day since Ole Miss received a historic performance from Robert Domanic in the fast section of the men's invitational 1500-meter race at the 2018 Bryan Clay Invite, Rebel sophomore Waleed Suliman stepped up to the plate and delivered in yet another exciting final section. The top eight times in the NCAA this season were run in the 10th and final heat Friday night, with Suliman finishing sixth overall at the nation's sixth-fastest time at 3:38.72.
That time registers as a one-second PR from Suliman's 3:39.76 ran in Heat Nine of last year's Bryan Clay Invite, and it trails only Domanic's 3:36.33 (NCAA all-time No. 9) and Craig Engels' 3:37.66 from the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, in Ole Miss history. Suliman improves on his lead in the SEC this season after his time tonight, and he now ranks No. 2 in the East Region.
Ole Miss also received two additional season-best performances elsewhere in the invitational 1500-meter, with sophomore Everett Smulders finishing 31st overall at 3:44.77 and senior Derek Gutierrez 45th at 3:45.93.
Sophomore Cade Bethmann had a similarly successful race to open the day earlier Friday afternoon, finishing fourth overall in the 800-meter at Bryan Clay at a career-best 1:47.81 – the eighth-best time in Ole Miss history. Bethmann, who already ranked fifth in the SEC this year entering the weekend, now ranks fourth in the conference in addition to No. 6 in the East Region and No. 12 in the NCAA.
Fellow sophomores John Rivera Jr. (eighth, 1:48.39) and Griffin Riley (13th, 1:48.74) also ran all-time top-15 times with the 11th and 12th-fastest performances in Rebel history, respectively.
MT. SAC RELAYS • Torrance, Calif.
Over in Torrance, California, at the Mt. SAC Relays, sophomore Clio Ozanne-Jaques toppled the fourth school record for the Rebels this season with an impressive performance in the invitational section of the women's 5K. Ozanne-Jaques, the top finisher for the Rebel women's cross country team at the NCAA Championships last fall, clocked the 13th-best time overall Friday night at 16:05.55, which snapped Mary Alex England's 2017 record of 16:10.93.
After her performance, Ozanne-Jaques now ranks third in the SEC, seventh in the East Region and 18th in the NCAA.
Ole Miss also received fast 5K races from Anna Elkin (25th, 16:26.68) and Victoria Simmons (27th, 16:31.64), the fifth and seventh best times in Rebel history, respectively.
Sophomore Lisa Vogelgesang, the reigning SEC silver medalist in the steeplechase, opened her outdoor season with a strong outing in the invitational section of the 3000-meter steeplechase at Mt. SAC, finishing sixth overall at 10:19.35. Vogelgesang's time puts her atop the SEC leaderboard, as well as No. 9 in the East and No. 22 in the NCAA.
Fellow sophomore Maddie King had a superb race as well, clocking an 18-second PR at 10:22.37 in just her second career steeplechase. She currently ranks No. 2 in the SEC behind Vogelgesang, as well as No. 10 in the East and No. 24 in the NCAA.
Senior Mark Robertson rounded out the evening for the Rebels in the invitational men's 5K, finishing 34th overall at the 14th-best time in Ole Miss history of 14:17.30. Freshman Mario Garcia Romo also ran, finishing 39th at 14:28.91.
WAR EAGLE INVITE • Auburn, Ala.
Representing the Rebels at the War Eagle Invite at Auburn, Shey Taiwo had the best performance of her outdoor season. The sophomore, who fouled on all three of her throws last weekend at the Joe Walker Invite, had an incredible bounce-back performance with a nine-foot PR at 63.87m (209-06). This mark moves her up to No. 2 in Ole Miss history, in addition to No. 4 in the SEC, No. 11 in the NCAA East Region and No. 19 in the NCAA.
Senior thrower Annika Larsson also set a personal best in the hammer. The Swedish native threw a PR to finish in eighth at 59.47m (195-01), which also places her fourth in Ole Miss history. Kendall Chavarria placed 12th at 53.25m (174-08) and Tedreauna Britt came in 20th at 44.50m (146-00) to round out the Rebel lineup.

She was trailed by Lauren Hoselton, who threw a PR of 35.15m (115-04) that ranks 15th in Ole Miss history. Haley Hood also competed, finishing in 20th at 28.77m (94-05).
