BATON ROUGE, La. – Ole Miss track & field concluded its regular season in strong fashion, putting together a superb meet highlighted by the Rebel women breaking the school record in the 4x100-meter relay at the LSU Invite on Saturday.
"I'm really proud of how we competed today," said Ole Miss head coach Connie Price-Smith. "This was excellent preparation, exactly what you want to see going into the SEC Championships."
The Ole Miss women's 4x100-meter relay team put itself on the national scene by going toe-to-toe with the collegiate record holders and reigning NCAA champions LSU, which entered the weekend ranked fourth in the NCAA at 43.47. The race went down to the wire, and when the final times came in the Rebels finished just one hundredth of a second behind the Tigers' 43.75 at a new Ole Miss record time of 43.76.
The Rebel quartet of Kelly Rowe, Jayda Eckford, Kaira Simmons and Brandee Presley broke the previous record of 43.80 from 2015 – which was also set at the LSU Invite by Nicole Henderson, Shannon Ray, Khadijah Suleman and Jhorden Hunter.
This record is a particularly impressive one as Rowe, Eckford and Presley are all in the midst of excellent freshman seasons, while the junior Simmons is primarily a long jumper who also set a season-best on Saturday, finishing third at 6.01m (19-08.75). Saturday's record time now ranks fifth in the East and SEC and No. 10 in the NCAA this year.
"(The relay) was the perfect way to start the day," said Ole Miss sprints coach Anthony Acklin. "Everyone came to compete. We had an extremely good practice on Thursday, so I know they were ready to run well. They took advantage of the great weather and did something special. The exciting thing is they are already thinking ahead and trying to figure out how to drop some more time."
The success for the Ole Miss sprinters wasn't limited to the relays. Five Rebels ran in the 200-meter dash, and all five set personal bests. The most dominant performance came from Jayda Eckford, who placed third and ran the fourth-fastest time in Ole Miss history at 23.24 (-0.1). Eckford was the second-best collegian in the field after LSU's Sha'Carri Richardson, who ran the NCAA's fifth-best time this year at 22.78 for the win. Eckford, meanwhile, ranks No. 31 in the NCAA and No. 19 in the East.
Brandee Presley also moved up in the Ole Miss record book with a PR in sixth place at 23.78, the 13th best all-time. Kelly Rowe rounded out the lineup for the women in seventh with a PR at 23.94.
Sophomore Elijah Dryer paced the Rebel men in the 200 with a personal best 21.00 (+2.4), the 14th best time in school history. Freshman Jaqaun Webb crossed the finish line in 21.31 (+1.2), which also ranks as a personal best. Representing the Rebels in the men's 100-meter dash, NCAA Indoor All-American Andrew Raspo set at PR at 10.55. These three athletes, along with freshman Kenney Broadnax, also ran a season-best in the 4x100-meter relay at 40.36 to finish second overall.
Kieshonna Brooks also had in impressive performance on the track for Ole Miss. The junior heptathlete placed fifth and ran a personal-best in the 100-meter hurdles at 13.43 (+3.9), which ranks as the third best time in school history and No. 24 in the East Region. Haley Hood also ran in the event, finishing eighth at a PR of 15.36.
The most impressive performances in the field for Ole Miss came in the pole vault. Cole Colozzo became just the fifth Rebel to ever join the 17-foot club, clearing a PR of nearly one foot at 5.31m (17-05.00). This mark moved him up to fourth in school history, fifth in the SEC, ninth in the East Region and 24th in the NCAA. Colozzo tied for third with Peyton Weissmann, who also cleared 5.31m (17-05.00). Winning the event was LSU freshman Mondo Duplantis, who cleared the second-best height outdoors in NCAA history at 5.94m (19-05.75) – the best height in the world this year.
Lindsey Murray improved yet again for the Rebel women, setting a season-best in the pole vault after clearing 4.31m (14-01.75). This mark moves her up fourth in the SEC, sixth in the NCAA East Region, and 13th in the NCAA this year. The senior also took a few attempts at breaking her own school record of 4.35m (14-03.25), but came up just short.
Allen Gordon had another strong week, clearing a season-best 2.16m (7-01.00) to finish third in the high jump. That height ties his outdoor PR that already ranked fifth in school history, and this year it also ranks No. 10 in the SEC and No. 13 in the East Region.
The Rebels continued to set personal bests in the women's shot put. Freshman Tedreauna Britt threw the fifth-best mark in school history at 15.41m (50-06.75) to finish fifth in the meet. Sophomore Shey Taiwo placed sixth at 14.24m (46-08.75), while Leah Klein rounded out the Rebel lineup with a personal best 14.01m (45-11.75), which ranks ninth in school history.
Ole Miss now looks forward to championship season, beginning with the SEC Outdoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, from May 9-11.
