Suliman Wins 1500-Meter Gold to Conclude SEC Outdoor Championships

5/11/2019 | Track and Field

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss track & field sophomore Waleed Suliman solidified his place as one of the top athletes in the conference after winning the men's 1500-meter at the third and final day of the 2019 SEC Outdoor Championships on Saturday.

It was a tactical race from the gun as Suliman and the Rebels jumped out front and led a tight pack through the first kilometer. However, Suliman was able to pull away after clipping off a 53.21 on his final lap – edging out Arkansas' Cameron Griffith by just more than one second to win gold at 3:47.64.

"It felt pretty good," Suliman said. "I felt a little bit weird on the first lap, but I had to be tough mentally. I was just telling myself that it is nothing and not to worry about it because the last lap is coming really soon. I'm just happy that I won again."

By winning the event, Suliman added to his long list of accolades during his sophomore season. The Richmond, Virginia native began the year by leading Ole Miss to its first SEC Cross Country Championship, and followed it up by earning All-American status at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. His indoor season was one for the ages after breaking the school record in the mile at 3:56.78 and making Ole Miss the first school in SEC history to win five consecutive men's mile titles.

Similarly, Suliman's gold in the 1500 this outdoor season marks the fourth year in a row that Ole Miss has taken the crown. Craig Engels won back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017, and fellow All-American Robert Domanic took home gold in 2018. Ole Miss is the first school to win four in a row since Arkansas won five consecutively from 1996-2000.

"Very important to keep the tradition rolling, same as indoors," Sulliman said. "I'm proud that our team is continuing that tradition and I promise you it will continue for many years."

Ole Miss had four other runners in the men's 1500-meter finals. Leading the way was freshman Dalton Hengst, who placed fifth after a late surge helped him cross the finish line in 3:50.47. Senior Derek Gutierrez also scored for Ole Miss, earning one point with an eighth-place finish at 3:51.40. Cade Bethmann (3:51.65) and Mario Garcia Romo (3:51.75) rounded out the Rebel lineup in ninth and 10th, respectively.

Meanwhile, Ylvi Traxler represented the Rebel women in the 1500-meter finals. The Austrian sophomore placed 10th for the second straight year, crossing the finish line at a career-best 4:25.33 – the ninth-best time in school history.

John Rivera Jr. also scored points for the Ole Miss men's distance squad. The sophomore, who placed seventh in the 800-meter at the SEC Indoor Championships, took fifth overall outdoors at a time of 1:50.23.

Sophomore Peyton Weissmann led the way in the field events with a great performance in what turned out to be a historic SEC men's pole vault competition.

Weissmann matched his personal best of 5.35m (17-06.50) on his first attempt at the bar, but was unable to convert at the next height of 5.45m (17-10.50) en route to a fourth-place finish and five meet points for the Rebel men. Weissmann has finished top-five in consecutive years after a fifth-place showing as a freshman last year. Cole Colozzo also competed, clearing 5.10m (16-08.75) for 12th place.

Winning the event was LSU freshman phenom Mondo Duplantis, who broke the 1998 collegiate record of 5.98m (19-07.50) set by Tennessee's Lawrence Johnson, winning the gold medal at 6.00m (19-08.25) – the best mark in the world this year.

Freshman Tedreauna Britt scored in her first SEC discus competition, placing seventh with a throw of 50.84m (166-09). Leah Klein also competed in the event and placed 17th at 43.03m (141-2).

Ole Miss also received several points on Day Three from its relay crews. The women's 4x100-meter relay of Brandee Presley, Kelly Rowe, Jayda Eckford and Kaira Simmons took sixth place at a time of 43.92 – the highest finish for the Rebel women in the always competitive SEC 4x100-meter relay since 2016 (sixth).

The men's quartet of Elijah Dryer, Andrew Raspo, Jaqaun Webb and Kenney Broadnax also notched a point in eighth place at 40.77.

Ole Miss concluded its stay in Arkansas with two season-bests in the 4x400-meter relays. The men's team of James Burnett, Christian Yancey, John Rivera Jr. and Andrew Raspo tallied one more point in eighth place at a season-best 3:12.01. The Rebel women's relay of Orianna Shaw, Kelly Rowe, Jayda Eckford and Brandee Presley took 10th at a season-best 3:41.18.

The Rebel men ended up taking 11th place in the team standings at 34 points, while the women finished 12th with 31.5 points.

Ole Miss has a week off before heading to Jacksonville, Florida for the NCAA East Region Championships, where it looks to qualify several athletes to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas.

Qualifiers for the regional meet will be announced in the coming days. In order to qualify, athletes must have ranked within the top-48 in their events on either the East or West regional lists or have been a member on a top-24 relay. The top-12 in the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon from each region automatically qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
