Ole Miss Will Have Nine Entries at the NCAA Outdoor Championships
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Ole Miss track & field closed out the NCAA East Regional in high fashion, punching four more tickets to the national meet to give the Rebels nine total entries for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas on June 5-8.
Joining the group today were the women's 4x100-meter relay of Kelly Rowe, Jayda Eckford, Kaira Simmons and Brandee Presley, sophomore Waleed Suliman and freshman Dalton Hengst in the men's 1500-meter, and Eckford in the women's 200-meter dash.
"I'm super excited," said Ole Miss head coach Connie Price-Smith. "We have a really young team that has been working hard, and it's going to be awesome to watch them when we get to Austin. I think we had a great meet here, and I think it's just going to give them inspiration for when they get there to go and compete and do great things once we're there."
The women's 4x100-meter relay was the first to book their trip to Texas on Saturday, and they did so in powerful form. The quartet – which included three freshmen in Rowe, Eckford and Presley, as well as a jumper in junior Kaira Simmons – clocked in at 43.45 to finish third in Heat Two for an automatic spot to Austin, shattering their own school record of 43.76 from April 27. This is the fifth straight season that the Rebel women have qualified for nationals in the 4x100-meter relay.
Eckford was not close to being done for the day, though, as the freshman put forth another inspired performance in Heat One of the women's 200-meter dash quarterfinals. Eckford, who just one day earlier had set a new career best at 23.19, bettered her time yet again to 23.06 (+1.0), the fastest time under a 2.0 wind reading in Ole Miss history and the fastest since All-American Teneeshia Jones set the school record at an NCAA wind-legal 22.97 (+2.2) in 2001. That time earned Eckford a time qualifier spot to Austin.
Eckford joins her fellow relay member Brandee Presley in qualifying for an individual event after Presley punched her ticket in the 100-meter dash, despite entering ranked No. 43 on the East Region descending list. Eckford's 200-meter time ranks fourth in the United States and sixth worldwide among U20 athletes – which gives Ole Miss two top-10 world U20 performances in the last three days alongside Presley's 11.37 from the 100-meter on Thursday (No. 4 U.S., No. 10 worldwide).
Sophomore and reigning SEC Champion Waleed Suliman took care of business in the men's 1500-meter quarterfinals, winning Heat One for an automatic trip to Austin at 3:49.34. This is Suliman's first trip to the national meet outdoors, the fact of which elicited a big celebration from Suliman at the finish line when he knew his trip was booked. Celebration was also in the cards for freshman Dalton Hengst, who ran a time qualifying performance in Heat Two at 3:46.38 for his first career national trip as well.
Although he did not qualify for the NCAA meet, freshman Kenney Broadnax improved yet again in the men's 110-meter hurdles quarterfinals, running a PR for the second day in a row at 13.94 (+1.8), the sixth-best time in Ole Miss history.
Competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships begins June 5 at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium – the first time the national meet has not been held in Eugene, Oregon since 2012 (Des Moines, Iowa). The meet will be televised and streamed on the ESPN family of networks.
