Six Rebels Qualify for 1500-Meter Finals to Lead at Day Two of SEC Championships

5/10/2019 | Track and Field

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss track & field put itself in good condition for Saturday, qualifying six to finals across the men's and women's 1500-meter prelims amid several other solid efforts that led to points for the Rebels at Day Two of the SEC Outdoor Championships on Friday.

The most impressive performances of the day came in the men's 1500-meter prelims. In total, five Rebels competed in the prelims and all five qualified through to Saturday's final. Senior Derek Gutierrez led the field with a victory in Heat One at a meet-leading 3:45.29. Sophomore Waleed Suliman also automatically qualified after finishing third in the first heat at 3:45.49. Freshmen Dalton Hengst (3:48.88) and Mario Garcia Romo (3:49.25) qualified by running the top-two non-automatic qualifying times, while sophomore Cade Bethmann punched his ticket by winning Heat Two (3:52.51).

Ole Miss enters Saturday final with the NCAA's No. 3 event squad ranking in the men's 1500-meter, with an average time of 3:42.24 among the top four times on the team this year from Suliman (3:38.72), Bethmann (3:41.65), Hengst (3:43.92) and Garcia Romo (3:44.69) – all underclassmen.

Ylvi Traxer was the lone Rebel woman in the 1500-meter race, and she will join in on the fun Saturday after punching the last time qualifying ticket to finals with a time qualifier of 4:26.47. The sophomore also qualified for the 1500-meter finals last year at the SEC Outdoor Championships, placing 10th in the final as a freshman.

Day Two concluded with another strong showing on the track in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase. Sophomore Lisa Vogelgesang led the way, finishing fourth at a season-best 10:17.14 to score five points for the Rebel women. Sophomore Maddie King narrowly missed out on scoring with a ninth-place finish at 10:36.52, while freshman Morgan Claire Rose rounded out the Rebel lineup at 10:57.02, a PR that ranks 10th in school history.

Sophomore Allen Gordon had the highest finish for the Rebel men on Day Two. After failing to clear the opening height in the high jump, the sophomore had an incredible bounce-back performance, leaping a personal best 7.89m (25-10.75) for fifth place in the long jump – which beat out reigning SEC Outdoor long jump champion and All-American Grant Holloway of Florida (sixth place, 7.84m/25-08.75). With the new PR, Gordon moves up to No. 4 in Ole Miss history.

Day Two also featured the final three events in the heptathlon, highlighted by a second consecutive fifth-place finish for Kieshonna Brooks. The junior rounded out the competition by placing fourth in the long jump (5.87m/19-03.25), fourth in the javelin (35.41m/116-02), and eighth in the 800-meter with a PR time of 2:27.00. This put her total at a season-best of 5,248.

Junior Haley Hood also concluded a career outing in the heptathlon, recording another PR this weekend in the javelin (sixth, 32.37m/106-02) aside a seventh-place finish in the 800-meter (2:25.88) and 10th place in the long jump (4.56m/14-11.50). She ended with a career-best point total of 4,490, which ranks 15th-best in Ole Miss history.

Also scoring for the Rebel women were sophomore Shey Taiwo and senior Annika Larsson after an excellent start to the day in the women's hammer on Friday morning. Taiwo, a reigning NCAA Indoor Second-Team All-American in the weight throw, led Ole Miss with a fifth-place finish in the event with a throw of 60.74m (199-3). Larsson came out of the gates with a three-foot PR of 60.36m (198-00), the fourth-best throw in school history and her first beyond the 60-meter plateau. Sophomore Kendall Chavarria also competed in the event, placing 12th at 53.33m (174-11).

The Rebel women have scored in the hammer in each of the last four seasons, tallying 26 points in that span. Prior to 2016, Ole Miss had only scored 17 total points in the event in three different seasons (2008, 2009, 2011).

Senior Lindsey Murray added 1.5 more points to the Ole Miss total after tying for seventh in the pole vault at 4.01m (13-01.75).

Saturday will mark the final day of the SEC Outdoor Championships. Ole Miss will begin its day at 2:30 p.m. CT with the men's triple jump. Coverage of the meet will be broadcast live on SEC Network beginning at 5 p.m. CT when the 4x100-meter relays kick off the events on the track.
