Sophomore Clio Ozanne-Jaques Took Silver in the Women’s 10K at 34:12.78
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss track & field ended its night on the podium, as sophomore Clio Ozanne-Jaques earned a silver medal in the women's 10K to close out the action at Day One of the SEC Outdoor Championships on Thursday night.
All six Rebel women in the 10K started off the race in a tight pack, with Ozanne-Jaques sticking toward the front as a group of about 10 runners emerged from the remainder of the group. That pack raced neck and neck until there was roughly two miles remaining, which was when Ozanne-Jaqies decided to take control.
"I looked at (Ole Miss distance coach Ryan) Vanhoy, kind of waiting for him to tell me what to do, and he said just go to the front," Ozanne-Jaques said. "So, with five or six laps to go I just took the pace. I put a big surge in to try and break up the group a little. And then Jessica (Pascoe), the Florida girl, just went with me, and from there it was just us two working together. I had to keep fighting the whole way. It hurt, but I just keeping thinking that I had to do this for my team."
Ozanne-Jaques battled until the end, but Florida's Pascoe – the reigning SEC cross country individual champion – took control with 800 meters left to run, winning at 34:08.41. Ozanne-Jaques crossed the line at 34:12.78 to earn her second career SEC medal after making the podium in third place for bronze in the 5K at the SEC Indoor Championships in February. Ozanne-Jaques is the 15th Rebel woman to ever earn SEC runner-up honors outdoors, and she is the second to do so in the 10K after Emily Bean did in 2016.
Ole Miss also had some other good performances in the women's 10K, highlighted by sophomore Victoria Simmons, who scored points with a seventh-place finish at 34:33.77. Anna Elkin was the next best finisher for Ole Miss, placing 12th after crossing the finish line in 35:04.68, the ninth-best time in school history. Rounding out the Rebel lineup were Courtney Hopkins (15th, 35:41.93), Brooke Gilmore (16th, 35:42.99), and Emma McClellan (36:32.33). Hopkins and Gilmore now rank 11th and 12th in school history, respectively.
Senior Mark Robertson fought a similar battle in the men's 10K. The Ole Miss 10K school record holder was near the top pack for most of the race, but fell off the main pace pack late. Robertson still scored, though, with a strong finish in fifth place at 29:56.24.
Leading the Rebels in the 800-meter prelims was sophomore John Rivera Jr., who qualified for the finals on Saturday after finishing eighth overall with a time of 1:50.23. Rivera had similar success at the SEC Indoor Championships in February, where he scored SEC points by placing seventh overall. Fellow sophomore Griffin Riley just missed qualifying for the finals after finishing 11th at 1:50.94.
Although none qualified for finals, the Rebel sprinters put up solid performances across the board. On the women's side, three Rebel freshmen competed in the 200-meter dash. Jayda Eckford led the way, finishing second in her heat and 11th overall at 23.36, coming just two spots short of making the finals. She was trailed by Brandee Presley (23.99) and Kelly Rowe (24.28), who placed 23rd and 29th respectively in the event.
Elijah Dryer once again led the Rebel men, placing 15th overall in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.10, just 0.10 off of his 21.00 personal best from the LSU Invite on April 27. Freshman Jaqaun Webb also competed in the event, coming in 31st at 21.75. Senior Christian Yancey rounded out the Rebel sprinting lineup, placing 16th in the 400-meter hurdles at 53.39, just 0.05 off of his personal best.
Juniors Kieshonna Brooks and Haley Hood got off to strong starts in the heptathlon on Day One, which featured four of the seven events. Brooks leads the way for Ole Miss, currently ranking sixth overall. Her best performances came in the 100-meter hurdles, the first event of the day, where she finished second with a wind-legal PR of 13.48 (+1.1). She rounded out the day placing fifth in the 200-meter (24.87), sixth in the shot put (9.52m/31-02.75), and ninth in the high jump (1.55m/5-01.00) for a total of 3,128 points.
Hood set PRs in three of the four events and currently sits in 10th place overall at 2,780. Her personal bests came in the 100-meter hurdles (10th, 15.17), high jump (sixth, 1.61m/5-03.25), and the 200-meter (10th, 26.83). She also placed seventh in the shot put at 9.37m (30-09.00). The heptathlon concludes Friday at 2:35 p.m. CT with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter.
Joseph Benedetto began the day in the field for Ole Miss by competing in the men's hammer throw final. The freshman placed 12th overall and second among freshman with a five-foot personal-best of 59.36m (194-09), which moved him up to seventh all-time in school history.
Senior Alex Enright also competed for Ole Miss in the field, placing 14th in the women's javelin at 37.88m (124-03).
Day Two of the SEC Outdoor Championships begins Friday at noon CT with the women's hammer throw final. The day will feature the remaining prelims for running events, several finals in the field and the finals of the heptathlon. A live broadcast on SEC Network + will begin at 6 p.m. CT.
