4/25/2019 | Track and Field

BATON ROUGE, La. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field will head down to the bayou for one last tune-up before the conference championship meet at the LSU Invite this Saturday.

TEAM NOTES
• The Rebels are coming off a successful split squad weekend at Auburn and at several meets in California during which Ole Miss put in numerous performances that rank within both the NCAA top-50 and East Region top-48.

• Ole Miss ranks in the USTFCCCA #EventSquad top-10 in four events: men's 1500-meter (No. 2, 3:42.24 avg.), men's 800-meter (No. 4, 1:48.99 avg.), women's 3000-meter steeplechase (No. 4, 10:37.20 avg.) and women's hammer (No. 8, 57.68m/189-03 avg.)

WOMEN'S NOTES
• The Rebel women hold 10 marks or times within the NCAA top-50 and 11 additional performances sit in the NCAA East top-48.

• Sophomore Shey Taiwo, a Second-Team All-American indoors in the weight throw, had a career day in the hammer at the War Eagle Invite last week, recording the second-best throw in Ole Miss history at 63.87m (209-06). Taiwo currently ranks No. 21 in the NCAA and No. 13 in the East Region, and in Rebel history she only trails NCAA Champion Janeah Stewart's record of 72.92m (239-03), the 10th-best throw in NCAA history that made Stewart the No. 4 collegiate hammer thrower all-time. Taiwo also ranks No. 31 in the East Region in the discus (50.61m/166-00).

• Senior Lindsey Murray has either won of finished as the top collegian in the women's pole vault in four of the first five weeks of the outdoor season. Her season-best of 4.25m (13-11.25) came at home during the Joe Walker Invite, and it currently ranks 23rd in the NCAA and No. 8 in the East Region. Murray has also taken several strong attempts at breaking her school record of 4.35m (14-03.25). Murray earned her first career SEC medal at that height last outdoor season in third place at the conference meet.

• The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Jayda Eckford, Brandee Presley, Kelly Rowe and Kaira Simmons are currently the top-ranked Rebel track event at No. 23 in the NCAA and No. 13 in the East Region at their time of 44.18 from the Spec Towns Invite -- the sixth-best time in Ole Miss history.

• Sophomore Lisa Vogelgesang opened her outdoor campaign in strong fashion in the elite section of the women's 3000-meter steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays, running 10:19.35. She currently leads the SEC at that time while also ranking 33rd nationally and 14th in the East Region. As a freshman, Vogelgesang won silver in the steeplechase at the SEC Outdoor Championships at her PR of 10:06.00, the second-best time in school history and the No. 14 time ever run by a German U20 athlete.

• Fellow sophomore Maddie King is helping give the Rebels a one-two punch in the women's steeple SEC standings at her No. 2 time of 10:22.37, which was also run in the elite steeplechase at Mt. SAC. King currently ranks fourth all-time, and this year she sits No. 39 in the NCAA and No. 17 in the East Region. She also ranks 37th regionally in the 1500-meter (4:21.51).

• Sophomore Clio Ozanne-Jaques took down Mary Alex England's 2017 school record in the 5K, running 16:05.55 in the elite section of the women's 5K at Mt. SAC. That time currently puts her No. 38 nationally and No. 13 in the East Region.

• Ozanne-Jaques also impressed in her first career 10K race at the Raleigh Relays to open the season, running the second-best time in Rebel history at 33:42.06. She currently ranks 34th nationally and 11th in the East Region at that time. Freshman Victoria Simmons also had a successful trip to NC State, running the fifth-best time in school history at 34:24.00 (22nd East).

• Freshman Tedreauna Britt still ranks in the top-50 nationally in the discus at her Rebel outdoor debut of 53.45m (175-04) at the Trailblazer Challenge -- the fourth-best throw in school history and the 40th-best in the NCAA. Britt also ranks 36th in the East in the shot put (15.32m/50-03.25).

• Junior Kieshonna Brooks scored 5,144 points in her first heptathlon of the season at the Spec Towns Invite at Georgia, currently putting her No. 42 in the NCAA and No. 13 in the East Region. Brooks' PR of 5,338 from the SEC Outdoor Championships last year stands as the national record in her native Saint Kitts & Nevis. The top-12 heptathlon scores in each region automatically qualify for the national meet.

• This season, Brooks has set new career-bests in four of her seven heptathlon events, including her latest long jump PR of 6.18m (20-03.50) from the War Eagle Invite (50th NCAA, 27th East). Her 100-meter hurdles SB of 13.67 ranks No. 42 in the East.

• Other Rebels ranking within the NCAA East Region top-48 are: Jayda Eckford in the 200-meter dash (28th, 23.46) and 400-meter dash (40th, 53.98), Brandee Presley in the 100-meter dash (34th, 11.56), Annika Larsson in the hammer (40th, 59.47m/195-01), Alex Enright in the javelin (45th, 45.50m/149-03) and Kelly Rowe in the 100-meter dash (45th, 11.62)

MEN'S NOTES
• The Rebel men hold 11 marks or times within the NCAA top-50 and five additional marks within the NCAA East Region top-48.

• Sophomore Waleed Suliman led the Rebel charge in the men's invite 1500-meter at the Bryan Clay Invite last week, running in the fast heat and clocking the NCAA's sixth-fastest time of 3:38.72. The top-eight times nationally this year came from that heat. Suliman's time ranks as a PR and sits third all-time at Ole Miss behind Robert Domanic's record 3:36.33 from the 2018 Bryan Clay Invite (No. 9 in NCAA history) and Craig Engels' 3:37.66 from the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.

• Ole Miss also has three additional NCAA top-50 times in the 1500-meter from the Joe Walker Invite two weeks ago: Cade Bethmann (13th, 3:41.65), Dalton Hengst (24th, 3:43.92) and Mario Garcia Romo (46th, 3:44.69). Combined with Suliman's time, this quartet puts the Rebels No. 2 in the men's 1500-meter #EventSquad rankings from the USTFCCCA.

• Bethmann also leads a quartet of 800-meter runners that rank No. 4 in the #EventSquad rankings with his PR 1:47.81 from the Bryan Clay Invite. Other NCAA top-50 time in the 800 that came from Bryan Clay include John Rivera Jr. (23rd, 1:48.39) and Griffin Riley (32nd, 1:48.74).

• Sophomore Peyton Weissmann has taken at least a share of the men's pole vault title in three of the last four weeks. Weissmann's best of the year was a tremendous bounce-back performance at the Ole Miss Classic, winning at a massive PR of 5.35m (17-06.50) while also taking attempts at joining Sam Kendricks as the only Rebels to ever join the 18-foot club. Weissmann's PR stands third all-time, 17th in the NCAA, No. 6 in the East Region and No. 3 in the SEC.

• Sophomore Allen Gordon returned to action two weeks ago after missing the previous two weeks of competition due to a broken wrist. Gordon opened the season with a remarkable performance at the Trailblazer Challenge, winning the long jump at an outdoor wind-legal PR of 7.75m (25-05.25), while also finishing in the top-three in the high jump (2.12m/6-11.50) and triple jump (14.78m/48-06.00).

• Gordon ranks 23rd in the NCAA in the long jump and 50th in the high jump at those marks.

• Senior Mark Robertson broke the Ole Miss school record in the 10K at the Raleigh Relays to open the season, running a 49-second PR of 29:00.46 to break Bernard Kuria's 1996 record of 29:07.38. That time currently sits No. 33 in the NCAA and No. 14 in the East Region.

• Other Rebel men ranking within the East Region top-48 include: Everett Smulders in the 1500-meter (22nd, 3:44.77), Kenney Broadnax in the 110-meter hurdles (31st, 14.08), Cole Colozzo in the pole vault (33rd, 5.05m/16-06.75), Elijah Dryer in the 100-meter dash (45th, 10.46) and Derek Gutierrez in the 1500-meter (47th, 3:45.93).

HEAD COACH CONNIE PRICE-SMITH
• Ole Miss head coach Connie Price-Smith is in her fourth season. Price-Smith, who was the head women's coach for Team USA at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, is in her 18th season overall as a head coach.

• In four seasons at Ole Miss, Price-Smith has already mentored seven NCAA champions, 61 First or Second-Team All-Americans, 29 SEC Champions and several of the highest SEC and national team finishes ever at Ole Miss -- including the highest SEC Outdoor finish ever for the women in fifth place in 2018.

• Price-Smith's coaching staff all returns as well, with associate head coach Andre Scott (jumps, women's multis), assistant coach Anthony Acklin (sprints, hurdles), assistant coach Brian Porter (pole vault, javelin, men's multis), assistant coach John Smith (throws) and director of operations Sasha Leeth all returning for their fourth seasons at Ole Miss, with associate head coach Ryan Vanhoy (distance) entering his sixth year as a Rebel.
