Softball Takes Game One over No. 9 Tennessee, 5-3

4/26/2019 | Softball

Tate Whitley and Amanda Roth Each Drive in a Pair to Lead the Rebs to a Record 12th SEC Win

OXFORD, Miss. – No. 17 Ole Miss (35-12, 12-6 SEC) Pounced for a pair of runs in the second and third innings, riding the momentum to a 5-3 win in Game One over No. 9 Tennessee (36-11, 11-8 SEC) Friday night at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

It is the 12th SEC win of the season for the Rebels, breaking the program-record of 11 set in 2016. The Rebels move into a tie with LSU for second in the SEC with a 12-6 league record.

Tate Whitley and Amanda Roth delivered at the dish for the Rebs, each driving home a pair of runs. Autumn Gillespie went 2-for-2 and reached in all three plate appearances, coming around to score each time.

In the circle, senior Brittany Finney picked up the win to move to 14-5 on the year. Finney threw 6.1 frames, largely scattering her 11 hits allowed to surrender just three runs (two earned), striking out six along the way. Molly Jacobsen came in to pick up the final two outs, garnering the save.

The Volunteers threatened to take an early lead in the second, loading the bases with just one out on the board. However, Finney battled out of trouble, inducing a fielder's choice to cut the runner down at the plate and a lazy fly ball to Kylan Becker in center.

One half inning later, Ole Miss was ahead. The Rebs took advantage of their bases-loaded situation, with Tate Whitley delivering an RBI single to left and Kylan Becker legging out an infield single to score a second Rebel run.

Ole Miss tacked on to its lead in the fourth with a two-out rally. Autumn Gillespie got things started with a walk and Kaylee Horton followed with a single to put two runners on. After a double steal, Amanda Roth punched a clutch single up the middle to bring both runners around, extending the Rebel lead to 4-0.

Tennessee broke up the shutout in the fourth, taking advantage of a fielding error to score one run but Ole Miss got it right back in the fifth as Whitley lifted a fly ball deep to left, allowing Gillespie to tag up and score easily for a sacrifice.

The Volunteers a single in the sixth and seventh to draw closer and put the tying run on first base in the final frame but Jacobsen got Gracie Osbron swinging to close out the win for Ole Miss in the series opener.

The Rebels and Vols will reconvene for Game Two on Saturday at 4 p.m. It will be Senior Day at the Ole Miss Softball Complex as the Rebels honor their three seniors, Kylan Becker, Brittany Finney and Izzy Werdann, during pregame festivities.
