Softball Suffer’s Tough 2-1 Loss to No. 9 Tennessee in Extras

4/28/2019 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – No. 17 Ole Miss (36-12, 13-7 SEC) and No. 9 Tennessee (37-12, 12-9 SEC) went back-and-forth all afternoon long Sunday in a pitchers' duel at the Ole Miss Softball Complex, with the Volunteers coming out on top 2-1 in Game 3 of the series.

Molly Jacobsen was the tough-luck loser in the circle despite not allowing a single earned run. The junior was charged with one unearned run on four hits in 7.2 frames. Brittany Finney pitched 1.1 innings out of the bullpen, surrendering a run on three hits.

On the other side, Ole Miss struggled to find their footing against Vols starter Matty Moss, who earned the win in a complete-game showing, allowing one run on four hits and a pair of walks.

With neither side showing much life offensively through three and a half innings, Ole Miss broke through in the fourth. Abbey Latham got things started with a one-out double down the left field line, with Katelin Cooper coming in to pinch run. A deep fly ball advanced Cooper to third and Gabby Alvarez came up clutch with a looping single to right, plating the speedy freshman.

Tennessee struck back to tie the game in the sixth, leading off the inning with a single off the third base bag and eventually knotting the score with a sacrifice fly to center field. After a one-out double in the seventh, the Rebels re-entered Jacobsen and the junior got Ole Miss out of dodge to keep the score tied.

Jacobsen and Moss continued to do work in their respective half innings, sending the game into extras, where the Volunteers took advantage of a Rebel error to score what turned out the be the winning run. The Rebs brought the tying run to third in the home half but couldn't keep the rally going, allowing Tennessee to salvage a win in Game 3.

Ole Miss will look to bounce back in the final series of the regular season, heading to Athens for a three-game set with Georgia Friday through Sunday.
