Rebel Junior Earns Spot on Community Service Team for Third Year
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss baseball junior Thomas Dillard was named to the 2019 Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, the league office announced Wednesday morning.
The SEC names a community service team for each of its 21 league-sponsored sports, looking to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his community through superior service efforts. Dillard has earned a spot on the SEC Community Service team in each of his three years as a Rebel.
The junior out of Oxford has actively assisted his hometown and the surrounding community in a litany of ways. Dillard went to local elementary schools to read books to students as part of the Reading with the Rebels program, visiting four schools in the Oxford School District during this academic year. He joined in the nationwide Read Across America program, encouraging kids to read on a more consistent basis.
After sustaining an internal injury playing football as a sophomore in high school, Dillard's athletic career, as well as his life, were in jeopardy. He went to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital and was restored back to full health. After a tremendous experience as a patient, Dillard has returned to visit the hospital on his own and also orchestrated a team visit to the hospital in the spring of 2019.
Dillard was a leader in the Adopt-A-Basket program, working with Interfaith Compassion Ministries to provide a total of 50 Thanksgiving baskets from the Ole Miss Athletics Department to those in the Lafayette and Oxford communities.
Using his talents on the diamond, he volunteered at the Bats and Balls Clinic in coordination with the Junior Auxiliary of Oxford.
On campus, Dillard represents his fellow student-athletes on the Ole Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), meeting throughout the year with athletic department administration. He joined other Ole Miss students to participate in the Batson Children's Hospital RebelTHON, a fundraising event for the Children's Miracle Network Hospital.
