Five Rebels Also Advanced to Quarterfinals Later This Week
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Ole Miss track & field sophomore Allen Gordon punched his first career ticket to the national meet after a qualifying performance in the long jump, highlighting a solid first day for the Rebels at the NCAA East Regional on Thursday.
Gordon, already one of the top long jumpers and high jumpers in Ole Miss history, took eighth in the long jump, topping out at 7.64m (25-00.75) to book a trip to Austin, Texas for the NCAA Championships. The Omaha, Nebraska native is coming off a career performance at the SEC Championships, in which he finished fifth at a career-best 7.89m (25-10.75). Gordon is one of just two Rebels to ever jump 25-10 in the long jump and 7-feet in the high jump outdoors alongside NCAA Champion Savante' Stringfellow.
Gordon also still has the high jump to go on Saturday afternoon, in which he enters with a personal and season-best 2.16m (7-01.00).
Ole Miss also had five advance to quarterfinals on the track, led by a resplendent preliminary performance by freshman Brandee Presley in the women's 100-meter dash. Presley, who entered with a career-best of 11.56, blazed to a second-place finish in the sixth and final heat at 11.37 (+1.1) for an automatic qualifying spot to tomorrow's quarterfinal. That time was sixth-best overall and second in that heat only to an 11.24 from Norfolk State's Kiara Grant, who posted the top time of the day.
Furthermore, it is the fastest wind-legal time (less than 2.0) at Ole Miss since Teneeshia Jones' 11.24 (+0.5) from June 18, 2000. Presley's heroics today ranks as the No. 3 overall time in Ole Miss history, as well as the No. 4 time by an American junior and the No. 10 time on the worldwide junior list.
Reigning SEC Champion and sophomore Waleed Suliman took care of business in the second heat of the men's 1500-meter, earning an automatic qualifier to Saturday's quarterfinal at 3:53.60 to finish second in the heat. Dalton Hengst, the top freshman finisher in the 1500 at SECs in fifth place, also snagged an auto qualifier spot, finishing third in Heat Three at 3:56.08.
Rebel sophomores John Rivera Jr. and Griffin Riley will make it an Ole Miss double-feature in the men's 800-meter quarterfinal tomorrow as well after qualifying in their races tonight. Rivera earned an automatic spot after finishing third in Heat Four at 1:50.44, while Riley took one of the time qualifier slots at 1:50.46.
Junior Kieshonna Brooks came heartbreakingly close to joining Allen Gordon in punching tickets to nationals in the long jump, falling just one centimeter short at 6.04m (19-09.75) to conclude another superb year with the Rebels.
Competition picks back up on Day Two at 11 a.m. CT with Shey Taiwo and Tedreauna Britt in the women's discus.
