Freshman Joseph Benedetto Also Qualified for the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships
MIRAMAR, Fla. – Ole Miss track & field freshman Joseph Benedetto won the U.S. junior national title in the men's hammer throw after a dominant performance at Day One of the 2019 USATF U20 Outdoor Championships on Friday afternoon.
Benedetto – a native of Middletown, New York – took the lead on his third throw of 66.99m (219-09) with the six-kilogram hammer, which ended up being the winning throw by more than seven feet over second-place finisher Garrett Doyle of Ohio State (64.73m/212-04). His win punches his ticket to Costa Rica for the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships later this summer on July 18-21 in San Jose – making him the first Rebel to qualify for the junior Pan American Games since Carmia Carroll in 2005.
"I am super proud of Joey and the way that he competed today," said Ole Miss head coach Connie Price-Smith. "I am excited that he will now get to experience what it's like being on a USA team and what it's like to compete internationally."
Benedetto ended his freshman season already ranked seventh all-time at Ole Miss in the hammer with the regular collegiate weight of 16 pounds at 59.36m (194-09) from the 2019 SEC Outdoor Championships that qualified him for the NCAA East Regional.
Ole Miss returns to action on Saturday, with freshmen sprinters Brandee Presley and Kelly Rowe running in the women's 100-meter dash prelims at 2:42 p.m. CT, while fellow freshman Tedreauna Britt will throw in both the discus (3:15) and shot put (5:15) finals.
