Ole Miss Track & Field Treks to Texas for NCAA Outdoor Championships

6/3/2019 | Track and Field

AUSTIN, Texas – The Lone Star State awaits Ole Miss track & field, which will be represented by 10 student-athletes in nine events on the biggest stage of the year at the NCAA Outdoor Championships – this year held at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium from June 5-8.

The finest athletes in Division I will descend upon Austin this week for the four-day meet, which is split into men's competition (June 5 & 7) and women's competition (June 6 & 8). To get to this point, student-athletes needed to qualify for their respective NCAA Regional Preliminary Round Championship (East or West), and then needed to finish within the top-12 of their events at the regional meet in order to punch their ticket to Texas. Athletes competing in either the decathlon or heptathlon needed only to finish within the top-12 nationally by the end of the regular season.

Those 24 total athletes will not only be competing for team or individual national championships, but also to grasp one of the coveted top-eight scoring spots for First-Team All-American status. Places nine through 16 receive Second Team All-American honors, and the remaining eight competitors receive Honorable Mention All-American distinction.

This marks the first time that Texas has hosted the NCAA Championships since 2004, as well as the first year since 2012 that the national meet has not been held at Oregon due to the demolition and subsequent renovations of Hayward Field for the 2021 IAAF World Championships. Texas has hosted the NCAA Championships six times prior to 2019 (1957, '74, '80, '85, '92, 2004).

Ole Miss will look to add onto an already impressive history at the national meet. Across both the men's and women's indoor and outdoor seasons, 21 Rebels have won NCAA titles and 164 have earned First-Team All-American honors, while as a team Ole Miss has tallied 28 top-25 team finishes and scored 591.5 total national points. In four years under head coach Connie Price-Smith, seven Rebels have won NCAA titles, 34 have earned First-Team All-American honors, five Rebel teams have finished in the top-25 and have scored 111 total NCAA points.

The four Rebel men's qualifiers will compete on Wednesday to open the action, with the duo of sophomore Waleed Suliman and freshman Dalton Hengst running in Heat One of the men's 1500-meter prelims at 6:46 p.m. CT to open the meet for Ole Miss. This is the first trip to the outdoor national meet for both Rebels. Suliman, the reigning SEC Champion, enters with the NCAA's sixth-best time at 3:38.72

Also competing on Wednesday include sophomores Allen Gordon in the long jump (8 p.m. CT) and John Rivera Jr. in the 800-meter prelims at 8:14 p.m. CT.

Thursday will be a busy day of women's action for the Rebels. The Ole Miss record 4x100-meter relay of Kelly Rowe, Jayda Eckford, Kaira Simmons and Brandee Presley will run in Heat Three of the prelims at 7:02 p.m. The quartet – comprised of three freshmen and a jumper – have broken the school record twice this year, punching their ticket to Austin on their most recent record of 43.45.

Presley (100-meter prelims, Heat Three, 8:16 p.m. CT) and Eckford (200-meter prelims, Heat One, 9:14 p.m. CT) will also run in individual prelims on Thursday. Other Rebels in competition on Thursday include senior and seven-time NCAA qualifier Lindsey Murray in the women's pole vault (7:30 p.m. CT) and sophomore Lisa Vogelgesang in Heat One of the women's 3000-meter steeplechase prelims at 7:32 p.m. CT.

Competition on Friday and Saturday will vary based on finals qualifying for the track events.

See below for more detailed information on the national qualifiers and the NCAA Championships. Fans can watch all four days of action live on the ESPN family of networks, including specific live streams of individual field events in addition to the main broadcast.
