Warnell Blocks for Career Program Milestone as Rebels Sweep Little Rock
9/13/2019 | Volleyball
Senior Nayo Warnell becomes just the fourth Rebel to record 300 total blocks
CONWAY, Ark. –A career milestone and a combined hitting percentage of .324 led Ole Miss Volleyball (4-3) to its third sweep in its last four contests, as the Rebels took down Little Rock (0-7) 25-15, 25-16, 25-16 in the first round of the Central Arkansas Classic at the Farris Center in Conway.
Senior middle blocker Nayo Warnell tallied three blocks to accompany seven kills on a .700 clip. With her three rejections, Warnell has now recorded 300 total blocks in her career, a mark achieved just three previous times in the program's rally scoring era (Regina Thomas '11, Nakeyta Clair '15, and the late Ty Laporte).
Fellow middle Aubrey Sultemeier carried her Player-of-the-Week-Award momentum into the arena, posting nine kills on a .500 hitting percentage and adding three blocks of her own. Outsides Emily Stroup and Anna Bair posted nine and eight, respectively, while senior Leah Mulkey added five on a .400 efficiency.
Junior setter Lauren Bars recorded her fifth double-double of the year, dishing out 31 assists to accompany a team-high 14 digs.
After a brief stalemate at 7-7, Ole Miss built a lead by as many as six points in the opening stanza at 16-10. A trio of points from the Trojans posed a small threat and cut the lead to three, but the Rebels responded in commanding fashion, widening the gap to 10 points and taking a 1-0 match lead after a 25-15 set score. The middle duo of Sultemeier and Warnell combined for three kills each, while Bair tallied four.
A pair of early-set slams from Stroup gave Ole Miss a 9-6 lead in the second set, and the Rebels continued to ride that momentum, holding a steady three-point advantage for most of the duration of the frame. Ole Miss kept building cushion, taking a 2-0 match lead after another wide-margin victory at 25-16. Stroup finished with five kills in the set, hitting at a .500 efficiency.
Little Rock took their first lead of the match early in Set 3, holding a 5-3 advantage before a block by Stroup and Warnell even things at 5-5. Little Rock again pushed ahead before Ole Miss tied things once more at 7 on a kill from Warnell.
The Trojans continued to sneak into the lead, carrying a two-point cushion at 10-8 until sharp serving from sophomore Avery Bugg swung the momentum into the Rebels' favor as they reversed the gap to 14-12. Ole Miss went on to cruise to a hefty lead, capitalizing on a pair of back-to-back blocks from reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Week Sultemeier and strong swinging from the trio of Warnell, Stroup, and Bair to take the contest after a repeat mark of 25-16.
