Ealy Powers Rebels to 40-29 Win Over SLU
9/14/2019 | Football
Freshman Sets Rookie All-Purpose Yards Record with 273 from Scrimmage
Ealy tallied 273 yards from scrimmage to eclipse the Ole Miss all-purpose rookie record (172 kickoff return, 95 rushing, 6 receiving). Quarterback Matt Corral was 21-for-30 for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Scottie Phillips finished with 103 rushing yards and a score and Elijah Moore led the air attack with 88 receiving yards and a trip for six
The Ole Miss (2-1, 1-0 SEC) defense continued to dominate the run game and show its teeth, holding Southeastern Louisiana (1-1) to 66 rushing yards. It was the first time the Rebels allowed less than 100 yards in back-to-back games on the ground since 2015. The defense finished with three interceptions, nine TFLs and three sacks led by Jalen Julius and Willie Hibbler with seven stops apiece. The three picks were the most in a single game for Ole Miss since pulling down three in 2016.
The Rebel offense started fast, marching 72 yards in 12 plays to reach the end zone out of the gates. Tylan Knight and Octavious Cooley each came through with big receptions early to fuel the long drive. Back-to-back touches for Jerrion Ealy went a combined 19 yards, setting up the third touchdown connection of the season between Matt Corral and Elijah Moore.
The Landshark Chain made an early appearance as well, as Myles Hartsfield won a one-on-one battle deep down the field to pick off the Lions' first pass attempt of the game. Unfortunately, early in the ensuing Rebel drive, a handoff between Corral and Phillips was fumbled, giving it right back to SLU. The Rebel defense held after the turnover, limiting the Lions to just a field goal.
Ealy quickly erased those points and then some, taking the following kickoff 94 yards untouched to the house for his first career touchdown to give Ole Miss a 13-3 advantage after the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Southeastern Louisiana broke through to find the end zone on a 14-yard Marcus Cooper rush to cut the Rebel lead to three. However, it didn't take long for the Rebels to stretch that lead back out to 10. On the very next drive, Ealy broke off rushes of 52 and 30 yards, quickly carrying the Rebels 82 yards to pay dirt to make it 20-10.
The Rebels quickly got the ball right back, as Jacquez Jones delivered a devastating hit on the ensuing kick return to force a fumble. Isaiah Woullard pounced on the loose ball for the turnover. However, Ole Miss couldn't turn that into immediate points, as Luke Logan's 43-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left.
SLU responded, using a fourth-down conversion to set up a 20-yard rushing score by Devonte Williams to make it a three-point game once again, 20-17. After a three-and-out from the Rebel offense, SLU was threatening to take the lead, but Jon Haynes stepped in front of a Chason Virgil pass and brought down his first career interception.
The Rebel offense took advantage of the turnover, leaning on Phillips. The Rebel running back totaled 43 yards on the ground to power the drive, then Corral hit Jason Pellerin for the tight end's first career touchdown reception, and the first scoring reception by a Rebel not named Elijah Moore this season. The Rebel defense held late in the half to keep it 27-17.
After the break, the Rebel defense came out inspired, using a tackle-for-loss by Jacquez Jones and Haynes to stop the Lions in their tracks and force a three-and-out. The Ole Miss offense took advantage of the stop, putting together a nine-play, 69-yard drive, capped off with a 27-yard rushing score by Phillips to make it a 34-17 ballgame.
The Lions didn't flinch, though, converting a 3rd-and-14 and a 3rd-and-9 on the following drive to set up a deep touchdown connection. Virgil hit Juwan Petit-Frere for a 45-yard score to cut the lead back to 11 after a missed extra point.
SLU continued to cut into the Rebel lead as Corral was hit as he threw. Feletoa Ailua recovered the loose ball at the nine-yard line. Two plays later, a five-yard touchdown pass to Bransen Schwebel cut the Rebel advantage to 34-29. The Lions failed a two-point conversion attempt with a drop in the end zone.
On the next drive, two crucial third-down conversions by Dontario Drummond and Pellerin pushed the Rebels into field goal range. Logan converted from 22 yards to extend the lead to 37-29. The Lions marched down the field on their next drive, but Donta Evans came up large with an interception inside the Rebel 20-yard mark to stop the drive.
Facing two more third-down situations, Corral found Demarcus Gregory for 20 yards and Snoop Connor for 37 yards, killing valuable time off the clock. Logan converted a 32-yard field goal with 39 seconds on the clock for the final score to clinch the victory for Ole Miss and a Ryder Anderson sack sealed the 40-29 victory late.
The Rebels cap off their three-game homestand next Saturday, Sept. 14, against Cal. The game will be televised on ESPNU beginning at 11 a.m. CT.
