Softball Opens Fall Slate with Dominating 31-2 Win over MGCCC

Rebs Rack Up 28 Hits, Eight for Extra Bases, in Blowout
OXFORD, Miss. – Fans that made their way to the Ole Miss Softball Complex for the Rebels' first game of the fall this past Sunday were treated to an offensive exhibition from the Red and Navy as Ole Miss kicked off its exhibition schedule with a dominating 31-2 victory over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
The Rebels pounded out 28 total hits in the affair, including eight extra base hits. Meanwhile, aside from a small blip in the sixth frame, the Ole Miss pitching staff was nothing short of dominant. The Rebs allowed just two Bulldog runs in all on six hits, racking up 14 strikeouts over the 10 innings.
Eight different Rebels recorded multiple base knocks, with senior Autumn Gillespie and junior Amanda Roth leading the way. Gillespie went 3-for-5 with a trio of two-baggers, driving in five runs and scoring four more herself. Roth reached in all five plate appearances, going 3-for-3 at the dish with a double and a pair of walks while tallying four RBIs and four runs scored.
Junior Jessica Puk and true freshman Nyomi Jones also scored four runs apiece, with Puk posting a 2-for-3 effort with two walks and a pair of runs batted in. Playing her first collegiate game of any kind, Jones finished 2-for-4 with a walk. Following up on a solid freshman season in a reserve role, Taylor Watford went 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs, while junior Gabby Alvarez drove in a pair of runs with a 2-for-5 showing at the dish.
In the circle, all five pitchers utilized by the Rebels tossed two full innings. Sophomore Savannah Diederich got things started, recording all six of her outs by strikeout while scattering a pair of hits. Junior Ava Tillmann was next, allowing one hit and one walk, fanning one batter as well.
True freshman Taylor Bachmeyer allowed the only two MGCCC runs in the sixth after struggling a bit with command, but bounced back nicely with three strikeouts and just one hit to limit the damage. Junior Anna Borgen struck out one and allowed one hit in her two frames, while transfer Lindsey Johnson debuted with three strikeouts, one hit surrendered and a walk.
Ole Miss jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, seizing control of the game two innings later with six runs in the third. The Rebels put the game fully out of reach in the fourth, recording a myriad of extra-base knocks in the fifth on the way to 10 runs and a 19-0 advantage.
After MGCCC pulled two runs back in the sixth, the Rebels put the finishing touches on the game in the 10th with another offensive avalanche, going off for 12 runs to round out the game at 31-2.
Ole Miss will take a couple of weeks off before resuming its fall schedule on Oct. 6, facing off against UAB and Memphis in a doubleheader at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The Rebels will play eight fall games in all, including seven at home. All home fall games are free and open to the public.
