Women’s Golf Opens Fall Season in New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Ole Miss women's golf team is set to open up their fall season at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational (Sept. 9-10) in Albuquerque.

Head coach Kory Henkes is entering her fifth season leading the program and is coming off back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances and the first SEC title in program history in 2019.

Ole Miss earned spots in preseason polls by the Golf Channel and Golfweek. The Rebels come in as high as No. 18 in Golf Channel's poll, and sit at No. 23 according to Golfweek.

"The team is excited about getting our season started this weekend in New Mexico," Henkes said. "We look to continue building off our success from last season as we kick off the new year. Our team has meshed well together and they continue to push each other every day at practice. We look forward to teeing it up against the best over the next few days."

The Rebels will compete against the host school, New Mexico, in addition to UC Davis, Colorado State, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Kent State, Mississippi State, Nebraska, UNLV, Nevada, Pepperdine and San Diego State at the New Mexico Championship Course (6,317 yards, par 72).

Henkes will bring six Rebels to compete at the event. Pi-Lillebi Hermansson will play as the No. 1, followed by Ellen Hutchinson-Kay, Andrea Lignell, Julia Johnson and Kennedy Swann. Macy Somoskey will play as an individual.

Hermansson, the lone senior on the squad, played in six events last year, averaging 75.24 strokes per 18. She is one of three Swedes in the starting five for the Rebels first tournament.

Hutchinson-Kay was one of three Rebels to compete in every event last season, averaging 74.68 strokes, good for second on the team. The Taby, Sweden native put together five top-20 finishes, and was named SEC Freshman of the Week twice in the spring.

Lignell will make her Rebel debut in New Mexico. The freshman comes with a decorated junior golf resume in her home country of Sweden.

Johnson, a second team All-SEC selection last season, led the team in stroke average (73.16) and six top-10 finishes. The junior earned SEC individual runner-up, which was the best finish by a Rebel in program history at the conference championship.

Swann rounds out the starting five in her second year with the program. The Clemson transfer played in seven spring events and played a big role in the postseason, leading the Rebels on the leaderboard at both NCAA postseason sites, tying for 27th at the NCAA Regional and recording a season-best tie for 23rd at the NCAA Championships.

Somoskey will play as an individual. The sophomore played in nine events last year, including the SEC Championship where she turned in three match deciding victories leading Ole Miss to its first SEC title.

First round play begins Monday morning with an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start. Ole Miss will be paired with UC Davis and San Diego State.
