Rebels Record Fourth-Highest Total in Victory on Saturday
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A consistent team effort and numerous career highs powered the No. 6 Ole Miss rifle team past No. 14 Alaska Fairbanks in a neutral-site match, 4673-4655, at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range on Saturday.
Sharp and career-best performances on the Ohio State campus by senior Alana Kelly and freshman Kristen Derting led the Rebels to the team's fourth-highest total in school history.
Ole Miss (3-3), who last competed on Nov. 23 as a team, took an early edge against UAF (4-3) after smallbore, 2317-2302. Four Rebels obtained identical 580s including Kelly, Derting, and juniors Abby Buesseler and Sophia Cuozzo. Sophomore Erin Walsh rounded out the Rebel scoring with a season-high 577 points.
Derting obtained personal bests in the three-event discipline as well as air rifle (589) and aggregate (1169). She posted an impressive 195 in standing for smallbore, which is tied for third most by a Rebel since at least 2015.
Cuozzo continued her upward rise this season by earning three season highs, and a career mark for smallbore. She set new season improvements in kneeling (190), prone (199) and aggregate (1161) as a non-counter. For Buesseler, it was the fifth time reaching the 580s this season.
UAF's Haley Castillo was the top shooter between the two squads in air rifle (594). However, the Rebels bested or tied the next four Nanooks scorers to take the event, 2356-2353.
Kelly, a veteran from Acworth, Georgia, led Ole Miss with a 591. She also finished the day with a career-setting aggregate total of 1171 to tie Castillo. Rookies Derting and Claire O'Neel (589) as well as Buesseler (587) made up the remaining Rebel total. Walsh finshed right behind with 586 points.
The Rebels improved their NCAA qualifying score to 4673 after posting scores of 4674 and 4672 in back-to-back matches in two other locations in November. Half of NCAA qualification will consist of that average from the regular season and the other half will be added to the NCAA Qualifier match total in late February.
No. 3 Kentucky also fired alongside the Rebels and Nanooks, but did not receive a win or loss. The Wildcats already faced the Rebels in a GARC dual in early November and recorded a score toward NCAA qualification. A similar situation arose last season for the Rebels when the team shared a range during an Army and Memphis dual.

On personal bests:
"I am delighted to again see personal bests. Kristen Derting and Sophia Cuozzo both fired their first 580 in smallbore competition and Alana Kelly's 591 in air tied her personal best. Both Alana and Kristen posted personal best combined aggregate scores. Each improved two points on their previous bests."
On getting back to work:
"Going into today I really didn't know what to expect since our last match was seven weeks ago. The break between semesters can be valuable, but it can also take a bit of time to get back into the swing of things. We required team members to return to Oxford January 2 for practice. This focused practice time, before classes start, has been great. I really appreciate the effort the team members are putting in to practice. That effort in training is what will make the difference for us."
