The Rebels Post a 4676 at No. 8 Navy on Friday
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 6 Ole Miss rifle team continued its upward trajectory on Friday, posting the third-highest aggregate total in program history with a 4676 at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Host and No. 8 Navy won the match by the slimmest of margins in the GARC standings, 4677-4676, but the Rebels improved their NCAA qualification score with the season-best total inside the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range. Ole Miss has now posted six top-10 scores in the school record books this season.
The Rebels top-three score average fired in three separate locations improved for the second straight week. It increased from 4673 to 4674.33. Half of NCAA qualification will be based off this average while the NCAA Qualifier match will make up the other half. Rifle is unique in that wins and losses don't determine what teams advance to the NCAA Championships.
Ole Miss finished the first half of Friday's relay with a slight lead after smallbore, 2320-2317. Junior Abby Buesseler tied Torrance Kang of Navy with 584 points to lead the field. Senior Alana Kelly (580) and sophomore Erin Walsh (579) also cracked the top five behind Navy's Kestrel Kuhne (581).
Both freshman Claire O'Neel and junior Sophia Cuozzo posted a 577 to help the Rebels tie the highest smallbore score of the season. Additionally, Buesseler (194, kneeling) and O'Neel (199, prone) equaled career highs.
The Midshipmen battled back just enough in air rifle to edge the match and win the event, 2360-2356. Sophomore Jillian Zakrzeski put together her highest total of the season with a 593 as a non-counter. Kuhne and O'Neel followed right behind with 591 points. O'Neel did all she could to keep the Rebels' score in match contention, firing 10 center shots on her last series.
Kelly and rookie Kristen Derting were next in a four-way tie at 590 points apiece. The Rebel duo found success in back-to-back matches. Kelly tallied an 1170 aggregate (one point off a career high) while Derting bettered her air rifle mark from last week. Buesseler completed the Rebel score with a 588 and an 1172 aggregate.

Due to inclement weather in the Midwest, Saturday's match against Nebraska has been postponed. The teams are hopeful to reschedule for some time in February. The Rebels will now look ahead and welcome North Carolina State into the Ole Miss Rifle Range next Saturday, Jan. 25.
