SIX OUT OF TEN IS NOT BAD
Ole Miss continues to rewrite its record book. This season the Rebels have posted six of the program's 10 highest aggregate totals. The three highest marks thus far (4676, 4674, 4673) sit third through fifth in school history.
BROKEN RECORDS
No record has been safe when the Rebels have entered the range in 2019-20. Junior Abby Buesseler etched her name alongside one of the best shooters in Rebel history. On Nov. 2, the Stacy, Minnesota, product tied Ali Weisz' individual mark (2014-15) for air rifle with an incredible 597. Buesseler's efforts also helped Ole Miss set the team air rifle total in the same match at 2372. She also set the aggregate Rebel mark (1183) and is on pace to surpass the smallbore season average set by Shannon Wilson (579.2) back in 2005-06.
TOPS ACROSS THE BOARD
Ole Miss has been solid across all three total average trackers at the national level. The team continues to rank fifth in aggregate, sixth in air rife and seventh in smallbore.
REBELS AGAINST THE NATION
A trio of individual Rebels have been especially key to Ole Miss' sustained success throughout the season. Senior Alana Kelly, freshman Claire O'Neel and Buesseler sit near the top of national leaderboards.
Smallbore: Buesseler (15th, 581.9); Kelly (29th, 577.9); O'Neel (33rd, 577.4)
Air Rifle: O'Neel (23rd, 590.4); Buesseler (26th, 589.9); Kelly (29th, 589.6)
Aggregate: Buesseler (16th, 1171.8); O'Neel (25th, 1167.8); Kelly (26th, 1167.5)
TOP 10 ALL DAY
This season the Rebels have not fallen outside the Top 10 in the CRCA poll. Ole Miss has spent four weeks as high as No. 5, a new program best. The current and remaining rankings will be based off each team's top-three-score average across three locations leading up to the NCAA Rifle Championships.
SCOUTING THE WOLFPACK
North Carolina State enters Saturday's match on a four-match losing skid. However, the team has shown high-end potential after tallying a 4675 on Nov. 9 at Memphis. The score was the second highest ever for the Wolfpack. Sophomore Emily Fisher leads the squad in smallbore (578.1), air rifle (588.6) and aggregate (1166.8). Also look for key contributions from freshmen Makenzie Sheffield in smallbore (575.3) and Aliya Butt (587.5) in air rifle.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Fans will get an additional opportunity to watch the Rebels compete inside the Ole Miss Rifle Range. The Rebels will challenge current No. 8 Nebraska in a crucial late-season contest on Friday, Feb. 14, beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
Due to inclement weather, a dual match originally scheduled between the Rebels and Cornhuskers on January 18 in Annapolis, Maryland was postponed. Nebraska was unable to travel in time due to heavy snowfall.
LAST MATCH HIGHLIGHTS AT NAVY (JAN. 17)
Ole Miss continued its upward trajectory, posting the third-highest aggregate total in program history with a 4676 at the U.S. Naval Academy on Jan. 17.
Host and then-No. 8 Navy won the match by the slimmest of margins in the GARC standings, 4677-4676, but the Rebels improved their NCAA qualification score with the season-best total inside the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
The Rebels top-three score average fired in three separate locations improved for the second straight week. It increased from 4673 to 4674.33. Half of NCAA qualification will be based off this average while the NCAA Qualifier match will make up the other half. Rifle is unique in that wins and losses don't determine what teams advance to the NCAA Championships.
Ole Miss finished the first half of Friday's relay with a slight lead after smallbore, 2320-2317. Buesseler tied Torrance Kang of Navy with 584 points to lead the field. Kelly (580) and sophomore Erin Walsh (579) also cracked the top five behind Navy's Kestrel Kuhne (581). The 2320 points were a season for the Rebels.
The Midshipmen battled back just enough in air rifle to edge the match and win the event, 2360-2356. Sophomore Jillian Zakrzeski put together her highest total of the season with a 593 as a non-counter. Kuhne and O'Neel followed right behind with 591 points.
UP NEXT
Ole Miss continues its top-level competition with a trip to Fort Worth, Texas where it will face the defending champions and No. 1 TCU. Sighters will begin at 8 a.m. CT.
