No. 6 Rifle Readies for Pair of Maryland Matches

Ole Miss to Battle Navy on Friday, Nebraska Saturday
OXFORD, Miss. – The nationally ranked Ole Miss rifle team embarks to Annapolis, Maryland for a pair of Top 10 matches to be held at the U.S. Naval Academy.
No. 6 Ole Miss toes the line against host and No. 8 Navy on Friday followed by a dual with No. 9 Nebraska on Saturday. The GARC matches are slated to start at 8 a.m. and 7 a.m. CT, respectively.

TOPS ACROSS THE BOARD
Ole Miss has been solid across all three total average trackers at the national level. The team continues to rank seventh in smallbore, and fifth in both air rifle and aggregate.
REBELS AGAINST THE NATION
A trio of individual Rebels have been especially key to Ole Miss' sustained success throughout the season. Senior Alana Kelly, junior Abby Buesseler and freshman Claire O'Neel sit near the top of national leaderboards
Smallbore: Buesseler (15th, 581.6); Kelly (29th, 577.6); O'Neel (31st, 577.4)
Air Rifle: O'Neel (23rd, 590.3); Buesseler (24th, 590.1); Kelly (27th, 589.6)
Aggregate: Buesseler (15th, 1171.7); O'Neel (24th, 1167.7); Kelly (27th, 1167.1)
GOING BACK-TO-BACK
This will be the second time this season the squad will compete on back-to-back days as a team. It will offer good practice ahead of postseason play when matches span two days.
SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN
Navy has eclipsed 4,600 points in six matches this season, including a 4671 in October. Sophomore Gabriella Mayes is the team's top shooter in smallbore (576.6) and aggregate (1165.6) thus far. In air rifle, Mayes (589) sits right behind classmate Michael Zanti (589.2).
SCOUTING THE CORNHUSKERS
Nebraska will compete for the first time in 2020 after firing the team's three highest scores of the season in November (4677, 4666, 4662). The Cornhuskers feature two of the top shooters in the country in sophomore Elena Flake and freshman Macey Way. Flake possesses the 10th-highest average in air rifle (592.7) and 16th in aggregate (1171). Way is 17th nationally in air rifle (591.1).
TOP 10 ALL DAY
This season the Rebels have not fallen outside the Top 10 in the CRCA poll. Ole Miss has spent four weeks as high as No. 5, a new program best. The current and remaining rankings this season will be based off each team's top-three-score average across three locations.

LAST MATCH HIGHLIGHTS VS. UAF (JAN. 11)
A consistent team effort and numerous career highs powered the Rebels past No. 14 Alaska Fairbanks in a neutral-site match, 4673-4655, on Jan. 11.
Sharp and career-best performances on the Ohio State campus by Kelly and freshman Kristen Derting led Ole Miss to the team's fourth-highest total in school history.
Ole Miss (3-3), who last competed on Nov. 23 as a team, took an early edge against UAF (4-3) after smallbore, 2317-2302. Four Rebels obtained identical 580s including Kelly, Derting, Buesseler and junior Sophia Cuozzo. Sophomore Erin Walsh rounded out the Rebel scoring with a season-high 577 points.
Derting obtained personal bests in the three-event discipline as well as air rifle (589) and aggregate (1169). She posted an impressive 195 in standing for smallbore, which is tied for third most by a Rebel since at least 2015. Cuozzo set new season improvements in kneeling (190), prone (199), smallbore (580) and aggregate (1161) as a non-counter. For Buesseler, it was the fifth time reaching the 580s this season.
Kelly led Ole Miss with a 591 in air rifle to win the event, 2356-2353. She also finished the day with a career-setting aggregate total of 1171 to tie Castillo. Rookies Derting and O'Neel (589) as well as Buesseler (587) made up the remaining Rebel total. Walsh finished right behind with 586 points.
UP NEXT
The Rebels return home to welcome North Carolina State on Saturday, Jan. 25. The match begins at 8 a.m. CT and the first 35 fans will receive an Ole Miss rifle t-shirt.
