Ole Miss Has Three of the Top-Five NCAA Marks in the Women’s Weight Throw
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Ole Miss track & field once again put the NCAA on notice as junior Shey Taiwo and freshman Jasmine Mitchell recorded the top-two marks in the nation in the women's weight throw at Day One of the Rod McCravy Memorial on Friday afternoon.
Ole Miss entered the day as the only school in the NCAA with multiple athletes in the top-10 in the women's weight throw, and an incredible day solidified Ole Miss as the top weight throw squad in the country. The Rebels came out swinging right at the start as Mitchell briefly held the NCAA's top-mark at 22.23m (72-11.75) on her first throw of the day, a three-foot PR that stands third in school history. Taiwo, though, took over with an NCAA-best 22.46m (73-08.25) on her second attempt, also a three-foot PR that puts her No. 2 in Ole Miss history and in lead of the NCAA by almost one foot.
Junior transfer Deborah Bulai – who entered the day ranked third in the nation at a season-opening toss of 21.53m (70-07.75) – also set a new career-best, throwing 21.84m (71-08.00), now the No. 5 mark in the NCAA and third in Rebel history. The trio of Rebels finished as the top collegians in competition in third, fourth and fifth places, respectfully. Former Rebel NCAA Champion and 10-time All-American Janeah Stewart won the competition at 25.05m (82-02.50), just three centimeters off her U.S. leading throw from back in December.
After Friday's showing, Ole Miss now stands as the only school with multiple athletes ranked within the top-16 of the women's weight throw nationally, and the only school with three athletes ranked within the top-36.
Allen Gordon also had an impressive performance in the field for Ole Miss, placing two marks in the NCAA top-10. The junior began the meet by winning the high jump with a new overall PR of 2.20m (7-02.50), which ranks seventh in the NCAA and third in school history. He followed this up with a victory in the long jump at an indoor PR of 7.83m (25-08.25), which ranks fifth in the NCAA and third in school history. Gordon is one of just two in Rebel history to have cleared 7-2 in the high jump and 25-5 in the long jump indoors, joining Olympian and NCAA Champion Savante' Stringfellow.
Senior Kieshonna Brooks competed in the 60-meter hurdles, setting a PR for the second straight week while qualifying for the event semi-finals on Saturday. Her time of 8.32 ranks second in Ole Miss history, trailing only record-holder Teneeshia Jones' time of 8.20 from Feb. 26, 2001. Brooks has had a superb start to the 2020 season, dropping nearly two tenths off her PR she entered the season with at 8.47.
Freshmen Sara Van Aken and Meg Goebel both made the Rebel record books in their first career pentathlon competition, with Van Aken placing seventh with a total score of 3,365 (No. 12 in Ole Miss history), while Goebel was eighth at 2,874 (No. 15 all-time).
Representing the Rebel men in the heptathlon for the first time in his collegiate career, freshman Pierce Genereux recorded 2,355 points through the first four events. He currently stands in fourth place before competition picks back up on Saturday for the final three events.
Day Two of the Rod McCravy Memorial begins Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. CT with the men's heptathlon.
