Men's Tennis Final score vs OK State 2020

Hain Lifts Rebels Past No. 20 Oklahoma State

Ole Miss picks up its second Top 20 win in its last three matches

OXFORD, Miss. -- In front of a near capacity crowd Friday, the 22nd-ranked Ole Miss Men's Tennis team (6-1) thrilled, pulling off the second ranked upset in their last three matches, downing No. 20 Oklahoma State (4-2) 4-2 in the William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center.

Sophomore Jan Soren Hain delivered a thrilling comeback on Court 2, fighting back to take his final two sets and register his first clinch of the season for the Rebels.

After dropping his opening set, Hain took three straight games to take the second set 6-4 and force a third set, where he continued to carry the momentum, picking up the opening game. A beautifully placed drop shot from Hain pushed him ahead once more, up 4-3, and he held serve to pull off the upset and record his fourth career clinch.

Things looked promising for the Rebs from the start after the veteran duo of junior Finn Reynolds and senior Tim Sandkaulen defeated the top-ranked pairing in the country in doubles, and Hain paired with classmate Simon Junk to clinch the point for Ole Miss and give them a 1-0 advantage.

The Rebels quickly built added cushion after quick victories from Junk and freshman Nikola Slavic for a 3-0 lead. Junk's was a win of revenge, after falling to the Cowboys' Luke Hammond last season. It was also his seventh consecutive victory of the season.

With four courts still playing, including first-set tiebreaks from both Reynolds and freshman Lukas Engelhardt, things became intense. Reynolds was taking on his third-straight ranked opponent, and Sandkaulen was knotted up a deuce point on a 2-2 third set.

The four courts continued to battle, and the pressure mounted after Reynolds and Sandkaulen fell at nearly the exact same time, quickly cutting the deficit to 3-2 and putting Oklahoma State within reach.

Hain was dynamic and finished strong, not surrendering a point in his final game as he registered the first ranked win of his collegiate career.

AT THE NET WITH… HEAD COACH TOBY HANSSON AND SOPHOMORE JAN SOREN HAIN
Toby Hansson
"The atmosphere was amazing. The crowd was really into it, and that gave our players a lot of energy, which certainly helped us… Jan [Soren Hain] showed that he can play at a very high level and I'm very proud of how he was able to close that match out in the end… Just that match as a whole, starting with doubles- they have really great doubles teams, but so do we. We really went after it and we were active, and played well with a lot of energy, and we kept that momentum going.

I'm really proud of the guys after we quickly went up 3-0, because those still playing on the other courts were dialed in and focused on their court. The way that Jan finished off the match, keeping his cool and serving it out, was just amazing.  I think we've showed that we belong and we're a tough team. We compete really hard and I'm just proud of everyone's effort and that crowd support- it helped us out big time."

Jan Soren Hain
"That was amazing. There were so many people and everyone was watching and cheering, and it was awesome to play in front of that. I was just so focused and having that crowd behind me was huge. It was motivating… I didn't even really see the score when I was playing, but then when I saw 1 and 3 go down, I just locked in. I knew it had to be right here, right now."
