Taiwo Extends NCAA Weight Throw Lead at Day One of Indiana Relays

1/31/2020 | Track and Field

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Ole Miss track & field junior Shey Taiwo excelled for the second straight week in the weight throw, leading the Rebels at a strong first day of action at the Indiana Relays inside IU's Gladstein Fieldhouse on Friday night.

Taiwo, who took the NCAA lead last week at Kentucky's Rod McCravy Memorial with a three-foot PR of 22.46m (73-08.25), upped the ante on Friday, finishing as the top collegian after raising her national leading mark to 22.70m (74-05.75). Her performance tonight gives her more than a foot lead atop the NCAA leaderboard over freshman teammate Jasmine Mitchell (22.23m/72-11.75), who finished seventh Friday at 21.15m (69-04.75).

Junior Deborah Bulai also improved on Friday, breaking the 22-meter mark for the first time in her career to finish fifth at 22.02m (72-03.00). That stands as a seven-inch PR that improves upon her place in fourth all-time at Ole Miss and at No. 5 in the NCAA. As a group, Taiwo, Mitchell and Bulai entered the week as the only teammates to rank within the top-10 nationally in the weight throw.

Former Rebel All-American and NCAA Champion Janeah Stewart, currently the U.S. leader in the weight throw, won on Friday after setting the Gladstein Fieldhouse record of 24.58m (80-07.75).

After a spectacular meet at Kentucky that saw top-10 NCAA marks in both the long jump and high jump, junior Allen Gordon was back at it on Friday, winning the long jump at 7.53m (24-08.50) – his fourth event title this season. He isn't done this weekend, though, as he is scheduled to compete in Saturday's high jump competition as well.

Fellow junior Elijah Dryer had an excellent day on the track, first by winning the 200-meter dash at a PR time of 21.37 (seventh all-time at Ole Miss) and being one of two Rebels to qualify for Saturday's 60-meter dash finals. Dryer clocked the third-best prelim time of the day at 6.79 seconds, a career-best that stands tied for ninth in school history and is the fastest run by a Rebel since Jalen Miller's school record 6.54 run in the semifinals of the 2015 NCAA Championships.

Senior Andrew Raspo also qualified for Saturday's final, running right behind Dryer in the prelim in fourth place at 6.88 seconds.

In the women's 60-meter dash, sophomores Brandee Presley and Kelly Rowe made sure Ole Miss was represented in Saturday's final as well following solid preliminary performances. Presley led the way with the fifth-best prelim time at 7.42, with Rowe snagging the eighth and final qualifying spot at 7.59. Presley, the school record holder at 7.18 seconds, ranks No. 5 in the NCAA at that record time.

Other notable Rebel finishes included Ben Savino in his first career 3K race, who finished runner-up at a time of 8:27.41.

Ole Miss also had two Rebels in the beginning of the men's heptathlon. Through four events, freshman Pierce Genereux stands with 2,368 points and fellow freshman Peyton Lowery has 2,308 points.

Action resumes at Gladstein Fieldhouse at 7:30 a.m. CT on Saturday morning for Day Two of the Indiana Relays, beginning with the 60-meter hurdles for the start of the women's pentathlon.
