Volleyball Suffers Sweep to No. 7 Texas A&M

10/23/2020 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss' second matchup of the weekend with No. 7 ranked Texas A&M resulted in a sweep to the Aggies as The Rebels dropped a four-set battle at the Gillom Center.

Payton Brgoch came out early with a tap at the net to put the Rebels (0-2, 0-2 SEC) on the board early, quickly followed by the freshman's first block of the game. Shortly after, a few service and attack errors from the Aggies (4-0, 4-0 SEC) gave the Rebels an early lead at 5-2. After setting her career high in kills the night prior, Lauren Thompson recorded a kill to the right side that was too much for the Aggies to handle, making things 8-7.

From there, the Rebels began to pull away, using a 5-0 run to take command at 15-10. The Aggies hung tough and got within a pair of points on a few occasions but Ole Miss was able to deny the comeback, claiming set point in the first on Lauren Bars' kill from Samantha Schnitta.

Aubrey Sultemeier led the team with 5 kills in the first set on her way to 14 total in the match, tying her career high. Meanwhile, the Rebels recorded four of their eight total service aces in the opening frame.

Ole Miss started off the second set with two kills and an attack error by A&M to go up by 3-0, before the Aggies were able to capitalize off of Rebel errors to pull closer. After trading points back-and-forth, A&M tied the set at 9-9 all and continued momentum to cruise to a second set victory at 25-14.

GG Carvacho's third kill of the night put the Rebels on the board to begin the third set, trailing 2-1. Texas A&M quicky went on a 4-0 run with three kills in a row to lead 8-2. Back-to-back kills from Brgoch and Schnitta gave the Rebels new energy as they worked to climb up the board, trailing 9-4. Sultemeier was able to halt a 5-0 run by the Aggies with her eighth kill of the match, igniting a 7-2 spark from Ole Miss to pull within five. The Rebs continued to climb and with Schnitta providing service made a run, rattling off four-straight points to cut the Aggie lead to 20-18. Unfortunately, the comeback couldn't be completed as A&M claimed the set 25-20.

Texas A&M got off to a hot start to the fourth, winning the first four points of the match and seizing control at 8-2. The Aggies relied heavily on their outside hitters, and ultimately ended up being too much for the Rebels as they began to pull away for a ten-point lead at 20-10. Kills from Schnitta and Thompson added two points to the board, but it was too much to come back from as A&M took five of the final six points to claim the set at 25-12.

Ole Miss will hit the road next weekend and head to Fayetteville to take on Arkansas to continue its all-SEC slate. The Razorbacks defeated Mississippi State in the opening weekend of SEC play in two five-set matches. Saturday's match will be streamed on SEC Network + at 2 p.m. CT, while Sunday's match will air nationally on the SEC Network at 2 p.m.
