Volleyball Drops Road Match at Missouri

10/17/2025 | Volleyball

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Ole Miss volleyball program put up a strong effort, but ultimately fell short in a 3-0 decision at Missouri on Friday night at the Hearnes Center.

Gabi Placide shined for the Rebels (9-9, 1-6 SEC), tallying 17 kills on .286 hitting, while Mokihana Tufono added 29 assists and 10 digs for a double-double. Caylen Alexander paced the Tigers (11-7, 3-4 SEC) with 15 kills.

The Rebels got off to a solid start, opening with a 6-6 tie, as pair of big opening swings from Tessa Jones paced the offense. However, some mental errors allowed the Tigers to go on a 5-1 run and take control. Placide and Shayla Meyer were able to keep finding holes, but service errors and some timely hitting by the Tigers extended their lead to 21-14. Another kill by Jones and an ace from Tufono helped the Rebels go on a 4-1 run, but Missouri would ultimately take the set, 25-19.

Despite a sluggish start to the second set, the Rebels recovered from an early 7-3 deficit. Placide took over, with a kill and multiple blocks, before the Rebels got to Meyer on the service rotation. Meyer delivered a brilliant run of serve, tallying three aces, while Placide added two more kills as the Rebels surged ahead for a 17-14 lead. However, the Tigers were able to regroup with an immediate 5-0 run. Despite a late block from Keirstyn Carlton and Placide, the Rebels lost the momentum, falling 25-19.

Head coach Bre Henry turned to her bench in the third set and found some early energy from Aniya Lewis, who made her Rebel debut. Lewis tallied a kill on her first swing and she was supported by more key swings from Placide and Jones to build a 7-6 lead. Both sides traded blows for much of the final set, as Tufono continued to set up her hitters well, as Ole Miss hit .261 in the third. Another kill by Lewis tied the match at 17-17, but the Tigers created a little breathing room with back-to-back kills. Placide and Melia Johnson kept it close, but the Tigers secured the final two points and the win, 25-22.

The Rebels continue the road trip on Sunday, as they travel to face Vanderbilt for the first time since the revival of the Commodores' program. The match will take place at 1 p.m. CT. and be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
