Sophomore Fires 73 (+1) to Lead Rebels on Day One in Arkansas
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Blessings Golf Club showed its teeth to open up the 2020-21 golf season, proving why it hosted the latest NCAA Championship. On a day where only 13 golfers fired under-par rounds, the Ole Miss men's golf team battled the difficult course and finished the first round of the Blessings Collegiate Invitational with a 304 (+16).
"This is a course that will make you pay for mistakes, and we had several of those today," said head coach Chris Malloy. "The good thing is we have two more days to compete and get better. We'll come back out and be ready to go tomorrow."
Sarut Vongchaisit nearly shot level par, but ended up with a 73 (+1) to pace the Rebels. The sophomore began his day with a birdie on the par-5 10th before making bogeys on four of the next nine holes. However, Vongchaisit finished strong by not committing a bogey over the final eight holes. He made two birdies throughout his last five holes of the day, including one on No. 9 to end his round.
In his debut for the red and blue, redshirt-freshman Brett Schell recorded a team-high five birdies on his way to a 74 (+2). After making birdie at No. 10 to start his round, he added a birdie on another par 5, the 14th. With three birdies on the four par 5s, Schell ranked second in the field in par-5 scoring (-3).
Jackson Suber added a 78 (+6), while Veeti Mahonen and Cecil Wegener each posted 79s (+7). Wegener birded two holes during his 18, his first tournament round for Ole Miss in 17 months after missing the 2019-20 season due to injury.
Tennessee leads the tournament, firing an 8-under 280 behind Hunter Wolcott's 68 (-4). The Rebels sit in a tie for 11th, but 36 holes remain to provide plenty of time to move up the leaderboard.
Ole Miss begins round two tomorrow morning at 10:13 a.m. CT. Coverage on the Golf Channel begins at 2:30 p.m. CT.
