Freshman Fires Final Round 70 (-2), Ties for 34th
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Redshirt-freshman Brett Schell made an immediate impact in his first tournament as a Rebel, using a final round 70 (-2) to move 26 spots up the leaderboard and pace the Ole Miss men's golf team at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational.
"I was proud of the way Brett finished this tournament," said head coach Chris Malloy. "He had a rough day yesterday but bounced back today and put together a solid round on a tough golf course."
Schell began his day on the back nine, tallying five straight pars before a birdie on the par-5 15th. Making the turn at 1-over after a pair of bogeys, the freshman played mistake-free over his final nine holes. With three birdies, including two on par 3s, Schell shot 33 (-3) coming in to get back into red figures for the day. The St. Augustine, Florida, native soared up the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 34th at 9-over (74-81-70—225).
Fellow Floridian Jackson Suber followed Schell with a 74 over his final 18 holes, tying for 46th (78-76-74—228). The sophomore's round included the Rebels' first eagle of the season, occurring on No. 15. Suber added a pair of birdies on the front nine, but a double bogey on his final hole of the tournament prevented him from shooting level par.
Sarut Vongchaisit joined Suber at 12-over (73-78-77—228) following a roller coaster 18 holes that featured four birdies, matching Schell for the most birdies by a Rebel during the final round. Freshman Veeti Mahonen carded a 76 (+4) with the help of a team-high 13 pars.
The Rebels shot 297 (+9) as a team Wednesday, a score that landed in the middle of the pack on a day where every team shot over par. Second round leaders Alabama took home the team title, finishing 4-over to secure a five-shot victory (291-282-295—868). Kentucky's Alex Goff claimed medalist honors at 6-under (69-65-76—210).
"We'll use this week as a learning experience and get back to work," said Malloy.
Up next, Ole Miss will head north to Franklin, Tennessee for the Legends Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Vanderbilt (Oct. 25-27). The 54-hole event is the second of three tournaments on the fall schedule.
