Suber’s Season Low 67 Paces Rebels in Opening Round

11/8/2020 | Men's Golf

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala.Jackson Suber carded a season-low 67 (-3) to lead the Ole Miss men's golf team in the opening round of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon. While Suber sits in seventh on the individual leaderboard, the Rebels find themselves in seventh as well at 1-under (279).

"Overall, a very solid day," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We certainly wish we could have had some more putts fall, but we really did a great job avoiding big numbers that can get you around this place."

Ole Miss recorded 19 birdies throughout the day, while making only one double bogey or worse. The Rebels' favorite hole was the short, par 4 sixth. Measuring only 331 yards, four of the five Ole Miss golfers birdied the hole.

Starting on the lengthy 249-yard par 3 17th, Suber began the tournament with a birdie. Two bogeys and a birdie over the next nine holes pushed him back to level par. Ending the front with a birdie, the sophomore added two more coming in to complete his round. Suber played holes 9-18 without committing a bogey and tallied four birdies during the stretch. Dominating the par 4s (-4) as well, he wrapped up his best round of the fall.

Jack Gnam tied Suber with a team-high five birdies on his way to a 69 (-1). The Ridgeland, Mississippi, native opened his round with a birdie at No. 16 before adding back-to-back birdies to start the front nine. Gnam birdied both par 5s on the par 70 course, while recording pars on all of the par 3s. Four bogeys on par 4s prevented the Rebel from going low, putting him in a tie for 18th.

After leading the field in birdies at the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate last time out (Oct. 25-27), Veeti Mahonen found only one during his opening 18 at Old Overton. However, the freshman avoided big numbers and made just two bogeys. Grinding out 15 pars, including 11 in a row from No. 2 to No. 12, Mahonen battled for a 71 (+1).

Brett Schell had a roller coaster round to shoot 72 (+2). He carded four birdies but also had six bogeys throughout the day. Schell endured an eight-hole stretch without a single par, making three birdies and five bogeys.

Ole Miss will join South Carolina (-1) and Arkansas (E) as the first teams on the course for round two Monday morning, beginning at 9 a.m. CT. The trio will be chasing tournament leaders Georgia, who shot a 15-under 265 this afternoon to build a five-stroke cushion over second place Vanderbilt (-10).
