Early Lead Squandered in Puerto Vallarta
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mex. – Ole Miss took an early 2-0 advantage but was unable to hang on to it against California Baptist on Friday, falling to CBU 4-2 on the second day of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.
Ava Tillmann took the loss in the circle, allowing three runs (one earned) in one and a third innings. Molly Jacobsen came out of the pen to complete the game, surrendering one unearned run over 4.2 frames.
Ole Miss (1-7) took an early lead in the second inning, utilizing speed on the base paths to break through. Gabby Alvarez drew a walk and was replaced by Kelsha Loftin, with Paige Smith following with a single to put runners at the corners. Katelin Cooper then came in to pinch run for Smith and stole second. Autumn Gillespie followed up with a bunt single to score Loftin and Amanda Roth brought home another run on a ground ball to second.
However, a four-run inning for the Lancers (4-4) in the proceeding half inning to take a lead of their own. The inning began with an HBP, followed by a wild pitch and a throwing error at second to bring in the first run of the frame. CBU's Amanda Argomaniz then dropped a double down the right field line to tie the game before a throwing error at third base gave CBU the lead. The Lancers added one additional run before the innings end on an RBI single by Brittany Galvez.
The Rebels put a pair on in the fifth on a Tate Whitley walk and a Nyomi Jones single but were unable to capitalize on the chance as CBU retired the final seven batters for the Rebels to secure the victory.
Ole Miss concludes the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge on Saturday, taking on the Mexican National Team in an exhibition at 3 p.m. CT before wrapping up the event against No. 6 Texas at 8:30 p.m. CT.
