Softball Topples Team Mexico in Exhibition Clash

Ole Miss Earns 4-1 Victory over Mexican Olympic Team
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mex. – Ole Miss got out to an early advantage and never looked back in its exhibition matchup with the Mexican Olympic Team, registering a 4-1 win at Nancy Almaraz Stadium on Saturday.
Ole Miss did its damage against a pair of former First Team All-American pitchers in Taylor McQuillin and Kelly Barnhill, tagging McQuillin for three runs and Barnhill for one additional run of insurance.
Anna Borgen picked up the win in the circle, putting in a complete game effort and scattering six hits for a single run, racking up four strikeouts along the way.
Tate Whitley got things off to a hot start, leading off the game with a bloop double under the glove of the diving center fielder. The freshman later stole third and came around to score when Gabby Alvarez blasted a double to the left-center field wall.
The Rebels nearly added to their lead in the second, when Abbey Latham led off with a single and moved to third on a steal and a ground ball. Mikayla Allee roped a liner that would have driven home a run but a nice lunging snag by the Mexico second baseman robbed the sophomore of a hit.
After a relatively quiet third, Ole Miss provided some fireworks in the fourth. Following a walk to Paige Smith out of the leadoff spot, Latham took the first pitch she saw and sent it cascading over the center field wall for a two-run home run, boosting the Rebel lead to 3-0.
Mexico cut into the lead in the fifth, stringing together a walk and a pair of singles to score a run. However, Borgen was able to induce a weak pop up to Ally Mena at second to retire the side and limit the damage to a single run.
Ole Miss got the run right back in the top of the sixth, with Kacey Hvitved leading off with a single and moving up to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Nyomi Jones drove Hvitved in, using a push bunt to pop the ball over the third baseman and down for an RBI single.
That was more than enough help for Borgen, who finished off the complete game to record the exhibition victory for Ole Miss.
Ole Miss returns to Nancy Almaraz Stadium Saturday night to finish off the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, taking on No. 6 Texas at 8:30 p.m. CT.
