Rebels Close Out Stay at Puerto Vallarta College Challenge
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mex. – A pair of two runs innings were too much for Ole Miss to overcome on Saturday night as No. 6 Texas defeated the Rebels 4-1 on the final day of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.
Molly Jacobsen and Anna Borgen were named to the PV College Challenge All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the festivities, with both lefties putting up masterful pitching performances for the Rebels (1-8) during the week.
Despite putting forth a solid outing, Jacobsen was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits, striking out four.
Texas (10-0) grabbed an early lead in the second as Colleen Sullivan led off the inning with a double and came around to score on Kaitlyn Washington's ground out to second base. The Longhorns tacked on another run shortly after when Kaitlyn Slack sent a single to center to plate Mary Iakopo.
The Longhorns tacked on two more in the third, taking advantage of a Jacobsen fielding error to scratch across two unearned runs on Iakopo's two-run single to left field.
Ole Miss put together its first real threat in the fifth, with Autumn Gillespie registering an infield single to short and moved up to second on a wild pitch. Taylor Watford and Sydney Gutierrez both pinch hit looking to drive in the run but a strikeout and ground out retired the side.
Texas once again put a pair of runners into scoring position in the sixth, looking to add on to its lead but a diving grab on a soft liner by Amanda Roth at third ended the threat.
Ole Miss put up a threat in the seventh, bringing home an unearned run and bringing the tying run to the plate but couldn't complete the rally, closing out its stay in Puerto Vallarta.
Ole Miss returns to action next weekend, taking on UAB, Louisiana and Oklahoma State in a five-game set at the Blazer Classic in Birmingham, Alabama.
