Stout Pitching, Clutch Hitting from Roth Lead Rebs to Run-Rule Win

OXFORD, Miss. – Playing in front of its home crowd for the first time in 2020, Ole Miss put on a show Wednesday night against Mississippi Valley State, registering the first run-rule victory of the season with an 11-0 win at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

Anna Borgen picked up the win in the circle, recording three scoreless and hitless innings with four strikeouts among the 10 batters she faced. Ava Tillmann and Savannah Diederick both pitched a shutout frame out of the bullpen, with each posting a pair of strikeouts.

Ole Miss (2-8) got to work early, taking advantage of some early offense and a pair of MVSU (1-4) errors to take a two-run lead. Nyomi Jones led off with a bunt single and stole second before Abbey Latham drove her home with a double hammered off the center field wall. Latham later came around to score on a fielding at third base.

After a scoreless second, the Rebels broke things open in the third, plating five runs on two hits and two errors to go up 7-0. Paige Smith scored the first run of the frame, coming home on an muffed catch at first base. The Rebs then executed a double steal to bring home Jessica Puk from third, with Autumn Gillespie moving up to second. Gillespie came around to score shortly after when Amanda Roth shot a single to left field and took second on the throw.

Roth proceeded to steal third and when the throw was high, the junior came home for the fourth run of the frame. Following a Mikayla Allee HBP, a Katelin Cooper single and a double steal, Nyomi Jones drove home Alle with a grounder to second base, rounding out scoring for the inning.

With the lead well in hand, Ole Miss piled on in the fourth. Walks by Smith and Puk and an infield single for Gillespie put ducks on the pond with one out. Amanda Roth stepped up and cleared the base paths in a hurry, roping a line drive to the wall in right field for a three-run triple. Sydney Gutierrez put the cherry on top, driving home Roth with an infield single and the Rebs collected three quick outs in the fifth to finish off the run-rule victory.

QUICK HITS
• In 8.0 innings of work so far this season, Anna Borgen has yet to allow a run. The junior is allowing just a .111 average to opposing hitters, surrendering a meager three hits with 10 strikeouts.
