Rebels Defeat Colorado State in Extras, Fall in Nail Biter to Utah
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mex. – Ole Miss split its doubleheader to open up the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge on Thursday, defeating Colorado State 2-0 in eight innings before dropping a tight 5-4 matchup with Utah in the night game.
GAME ONE | vs. Colorado State
The bats didn't get going until late but the Rebels (1-6) were able to ride the left arm of Molly Jacobsen for a 2-0 extra-inning victory to open the tournament, defeating Colorado State (3-4) in eight innings.
Jacobsen had all of her stuff working in the circle, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning and throwing up eight complete scoreless frames. In all, the Iowa native allowed just a pair of hits, racking up 10 strikeouts.
The Rebels started off strong in the first inning, with Mikayla Allee drawing a walk and Jessica Puk lacing a single to put a pair of runners on. Gabby Alvarez made solid contact with two outs but the Ram CF was able to get under it to retire the side.
Ole Miss also nearly broke through in the fourth, when Puk knocked her second single of the game and moved to second on a grounder before Paige Smith's would-be RBI single was robbed on a diving play in left field.
With neither team able to crack the scoreboard, the international tiebreaker rule came into effect with the game extending into extra frames.
With Autumn Gillespie beginning the eighth on second, Nyomi Jones dropped down a bunt single to make it runners at the corners. Jones stole to move into scoring position and Gillespie came home on a wild pitch, with Jones also moving up to third. Tate Whitley followed with a bunt to bring Jones home as the freshman beat the toss home.
With a two-run cushion, Jacobsen came out and registered three quick outs to secure Ole Miss' first win of the season.
GAME TWO | vs. Utah
In the nightcap, the Rebels fought back out of a pair of deficits in a seesaw battle with Utah but ultimately ran out of juice, falling to the Utes, 5-4.
Savannah Diederich took the loss in the circle, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits and a pair of walks. Anna Borgen came on in relief and got the one out she was asked to.
Things got off to a rocky start for Ole Miss as the Utes (6-0) were able to capitalize on some erratic pitching. A pair of walks and wild pitches allowed Utah to score the first run of the game before Ellessa Bonstrom brought home another on a single up the middle and BreOnna Castaenda drove home a third with a sacrifice bunt.
However, the Rebels responded in the next half inning. Alvarez got things started with a double drilled to the wall in center field. Kelsha Loftin came in to run for Alvarez and immediately took third. Smith drew a walk and was replaced by Katelin Cooper. The Rebs attempted a double steal but the relay from second to home was on the money and Loftin was tagged out at the plate.
That didn't keep the Rebels down. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Tate Whitley cleared them with a two-run single, with another run coming home on an error in the outfield. Allee grounded out to retire the side but when all was said and done the score was deadlocked at three runs apiece.
The Utes regained the lead in the fourth off of an RBI double but the Rebels once again had a response in the sixth. Paige Smith led off the inning with a walk and stole second before Taylor Bachmeyer came in as a pinch runner. Bachmeyer then moved up on a ground ball and came home to deadlock the score on Amanda Roth's infield single.
Utah again regained the lead with an unearned run in the sixth and the Rebels were unable to climb out of a hole for a third time, falling 4-5 to close out the day.
Ole Miss returns to Nancy Almaraz Stadium on Friday at 12:30 p.m. CT, battling California Baptist.
