Ole Miss Track & Field Concludes Meets at Texas Tech and Washington

2/15/2020 | Track and Field

LUBBOCK, Texas – Ole Miss track & field concluded a busy weekend of action with three event titles at the Texas Tech Shootout and a handful of strong races at Washington's Husky Classic on Saturday.

In an early preview of what the SEC Indoor Championships might look like in two weeks, sophomore Brandee Presley – currently the SEC leader in the women's 60-meter dash – went head-to-head with the SEC's current No. 2 (Alabama's Tamara Clark) and emerged victorious at Texas Tech. Presley finished second to Clark in a hotly contested prelim, running 7.33 to Clark's 7.32, but Presley found the upper hand in the final, running 7.28 to Clark's 7.33 for the victory.

Presley opened the indoor season in dominant fashion, breaking the Ole Miss record twice at UAB's Blazer Invite, with her best time of 7.18 still sitting at No. 6 on the NCAA list this year.

Senior Nicole Kallenberger also claimed an event win for the Rebel women at Texas Tech, taking the open section of the pole vault after a career day. Kallenberger already had the victory wrapped up after clearing a new PR of 4.05m (13-03.50) on her second attempt, but she rose to the occasion on her first try at the next height of 4.10m (13-05.25) – a five-inch PR that ties for the fourth-best clearance in school history.

Freshman Elizabeth Nix had an excellent day in the pole vault as well, finishing fourth at an eight-inch PR of 3.95m (12-11.50) – the eighth-best height in school history.

Junior Danny Guiliani claimed a victory for the Rebel men at Texas Tech, winning the men's shot put by six inches at 17.56m (57-07.50). Freshman teammate Daniel Viveros wasn't far behind in fourth place at 17.01m (55-09.75).

The Rebel women had a strong day in the shot put as well, with sophomore Tedreauna Britt launching a huge one-foot PR to finish second at 16.14m (52-11.50). After that performance, Britt moves up to No. 3 all-time at Ole Miss, No. 4 in the SEC and No. 27 in the NCAA this season. Two of Britt's freshmen teammates also made the final, with Jasmine Mitchell taking seventh at 14.76m (48-05.25) and Jalani Davis finishing ninth at 14.44m (47-04.50).

Senior Manny Foster had another solid day in the men's triple jump at 15.55m (51-00.25) to round out the field action for the Rebels in Lubbock.

Out at the Husky Classic in Seattle, the Rebel distance runners had a solid day of work in the mile races.

Junior Everett Smulders led the way, running the eighth-best mile time in school history at 4:01.31, while fellow junior Parker Scott had a similarly successful day, running 4:03.63 (No. 11 all-time). In the women's mile, junior Maddie King came within two seconds of her school record, clocking in at 4:48.18.

The majority of the Rebel team will have next week off as the Ole Miss distance medley relay squad will head to the JDL DMR Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Feb. 21-22. The week after, Ole Miss will travel to Texas A&M for the SEC Indoor Championships, which will run from Feb. 28-29 in College Station, Texas.
