Ole Miss defeats Samford in its final scheduled indoor match of the season
OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss Women's Tennis continues its win streak, picking up its third consecutive victory Saturday, downing Samford 5-2 at the William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center.
The match was highlighted by a thrilling opening set on Court 2 from senior Alexa Bortles, who endured nearly two complete tiebreakers, going through nine extra points to emerge triumphantly 16-14. Bortles carried that momentum in the second set, cruising to a three-game lead at 5-2 and going on to take the set 6-3.
The Rebels headed into singles play with the advantage, as the veteran duos of Sabina Machalova and Alexa Bortles and Anna Vrbenska and Tereza Janatova cruised through doubles play, winning 6-1 and 6-0, respectively.
Vrbenska rallied in her first set winning her final three games to take it 6-4, and provided the clinch for the Rebs after winning the second set 6-3.
Machalova was perfect in singles action, not surrendering a game and rallying from a 40-15 deficit in the final game to complete the blanking.
Freshman Kelsey Mize put up a valiant effort on Court 5, taking her first set 6-1 before Samford's Arianna Beltrame fought back to take the second 7-5 and force a third. Beltrame has not lost a match in singles play this season.
Fellow rookie Grace Anne Jones also threatened, winning the opening set 6-2 before also needing a third after falling 5-7 in the second. The match was decided via a super tiebreak, where Jones looked to stay alive, winning three straight points after trailing 9-2, but ultimately fell 10-5.
