RANKED REBELS
For the first time in 2020, Ole Miss has hit the national polls, coming in just shy of the Top 25 at No. 28 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Rankings. Individually, junior Sabina Machalova continues to climb the board in singles, rolling in at No. 47 this week.
REBEL RECAP
The Rebels downed the Bulldogs 5-2 last Saturday in Oxford, picking up their third straight win. Ole Miss headed into singles play with the advantage, as the veteran duos of Machalova and senior Alexa Bortles and seniors Anna Vrbenska and Tereza Janatova cruised through doubles play, winning 6-1 and 6-0, respectively.
The match was highlighted by an exhilarating opening set on Court 2 from Bortles, who endured nearly two complete tiebreakers before emerging triumphant 16-14. Bortles would ride the momentum into the second set, cruising to a 6-3 victory. Machalova was perfect in singles action, blanking her opponent 6-0 in both sets. Vrbenska rallied to win the final three games in the first set 6-4, and provided the clinch for the Rebs after winning the second set 6-3. Freshmen Kelsey Mizeand Grace Anne Jonesput up valiant efforts, but would both end up dropping their final two sets.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS
UCF enters the weekend 6-2, coming off 4-1 victories over TCU and UC Santa Barbara, and a 4-0 victory over Nebraska. The Knights will be the second Top 15 team the Rebs face this season, after dropping a 4-2 decision to then-No. 15 Michigan in the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
