Women’s Golf Opens Spring Season at Moon Golf Invitational

2/16/2020 | Women's Golf

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The No. 12 Ole Miss women's golf team heads to Florida for the Moon Golf Invitational (Feb. 17-18) in Melbourne to begin the spring season.

The two-day event will take place at Duran Golf Club, which will be playing 6,262 yards and par 72.

Ole Miss will compete against the host school, No. 38 Louisville, No. 9 Alabama, No. 21 Kentucky, No. 31 Furman, No. 34 North Carolina, No. 35 UCF, No. 50 Augusta, Campbell, Coastal Carolina, FAU, Kansas, Kennesaw State, Minnesota, Old Dominion and Seminole State.

The Rebels begin the spring as one of only two teams in Division I that have three or more tournaments wins. Ole Miss ended the fall with a sweep at the Battle at the Beach in Cabo, with Julia Johnson taking home medalist honors.

"We want to take each tournament one at a time and do our best to not get ahead of ourselves," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We plan on working hard day-in and day-out, constantly trying to improve. Ultimately, we want to get back to the National Championship in May and have a chance to compete for the NCAA title."

Henkes is bringing five Rebels to kick off the spring in Florida. Julia Johnson will play as the No. 1, followed by Kennedy Swann, Chiara Tamburlini, Andrea Lignell, and Ellen Hutchinson-Kay.

Johnson ended her fall making NCAA history. Her final round 61 at the Battle at the Beach tied the NCAA record for lowest individual round. She finished top-20 in every fall event with two top-5s. She is the leading returner in the SEC in terms of scoring average (70.40).

Swann finished no worse than a tie for 17th all fall including her individual win. The senior transfer from Clemson, in her first full year playing in the SEC, is seventh in the conference in scoring (71.20) and appeared in the lineup in all five events this fall.

Tamburlini is coming off a career-finish in Mexico, where she finished runner-up after going 70-69-70.

Lignell appeared in four events in the fall. She led the Rebels, tying for seventh individually, in the first team win of the season at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.

Hutchinson-Kay rounds out the starting five, appearing in the lineup in four out of the five fall events for Ole Miss.

First round is set to begin with an 7 a.m. CT shotgun start and continuous play for 36 holes. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
