Men’s Golf Climbs Leaderboard on Day Two in Puerto Rico
2/17/2020 | Men's Golf
Three Rebels Fire 70s (-2) in Second Round
RIO GRANDE, P.R. – The Ole Miss men's golf team turned in an under-par performance on moving day at the Puerto Rico Classic. The Rebels shot a 6-under 282 and moved into sixth place heading into the final round Tuesday.
Ole Miss is one of only six teams to be in red figures after 36 holes of play. The Rebels are third in the field in pars with 120 total, and have played the par 5s at 5-under the first two days of competition. Ole Miss leads the 15-team field in par-3 scoring (+3).
"We got off to a great start today," head coach Chris Malloy said. "I thought we did a pretty good job of navigating our way through the tougher holes in some windy conditions. However, we need to do a much better job of taking advantage of the easier holes. We let too many strokes slip away coming down the stretch."
The Rebels were led by a trio of 70s on Monday. Brody Blackmon, Charlie Miller and Jackson Suber all shot 2-under on moving day.
Blackmon put together a bounce back 2-under round after starting with a 4-over 76 on Sunday. The senior birdied two of his first four holes, and went bogey-free his first 16 holes. His only miscue came on the second-to-last hole, the par-4 ninth. Two of his birdies were on par 3s.
Miller matched Blackmon the first two days of competition, going 76-70 (+2) and joining him in a tie for 42nd overall on the leaderboard. The sophomore made a team-high five birdies on Monday, four coming on the back nine.
Suber is the top Rebel on the leaderboard after putting together two under-par rounds. The Tampa, Florida, native shot 71-70 (-3) the first two days of competition to sit tied for 16th. He birdied three of his first five holes and is third in the field in birdies with 10 through 36 holes.
Sarut Vongchaisit followed up his 2-under 70 with an even par showing Monday. The sophomore in a tie for 23rd overall, countered two bogeys with a pair of birdies during round two.
Veeti Mahonen shot a 3-over 75 on Monday and is 2-over for the tournament.
The final round is set for tomorrow with a 5:30 a.m. CT shotgun start. The Rebels will be paired with Clemson and Georgia.
