Softball Splits Day Two of the Blazer Classic

2/22/2020 | Softball

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss split its two games on Saturday at the Blazer Classic at Mary Bowers Field, falling to No. 11 Louisiana 5-3 in the morning before coming out on top in a wild 13-inning matchup with UAB, topping the Blazers 14-11.

GAME ONE | Louisiana 5, Ole Miss 3
Ole Miss took an early lead over Louisiana but was unable to maintain it as the Ragin' Cajuns clawed back to down the Rebels 5-3.

Molly Jacobsen took the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work. Ava Tillmann came out of the bullpen for 2.2 frames of relief, surrendering one run on three hits.

Facing Megan Kleist for the first time since walking off against No. 3 Oregon in Mexico two years ago, Ole Miss jumped on the righty and tagged her for more runs in four batters than was mustered in nine innings that night. Autumn Gillespie turned on a Kleist offering and rocketed a home run to left field, with Jessica Puk following with a towering solo shot of her own to center.

Louisiana struck back to halve the Rebel lead in the second, however the damage could have been far worse. With runners at first and second, Puk was unable to come up with a diving catch in left. However, Mikayla Allee alertly picked up the loose ball and fire to third for a force out. Jacobsen then induced a weak roller to first to retire the side and maintain the lead for Ole Miss.

The Rebels got the run right back in the home half of the second, with pinch hitter Sydney Gutierrez coming up with a clutch two-out infield single to plate Kelsha Loftin from third. Ole Miss went on to load the bases but were unable to break the game open.

A few innings later, the lead was gone. Louisiana strung together four hits in the fifth to score three runs, tying the game on an RBI double to left-center and an RBI single up the middle before a wild pitch allowed UL to take the lead.

The Ragin' Cajuns tacked on an additional run in the sixth and Ole Miss was unable to battle back, falling in the first game of the day.

GAME TWO | Ole Miss 14, UAB 11 (13 Innings)
Ole Miss let another early lead slip and went back-and-forth deep into the night against UAB, ultimately coming out on top in a 14-11 marathon battle with the Blazers.

Ole Miss utilized four pitchers to get the job done, with Tillmann earning the win with 2.1 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run on one hit and four walks. Savannah Diederich took the start, pitching 5.1 frames with three runs allowed on seven hits, striking out seven.

Anna Borgen came on in relief and provided 4.2 innings. The junior allowed seven runs, but only two were earned thanks largely to the international tiebreaker rule. In the end Borgen surrendered four hits, striking out two. Jacobsen was tasked with getting the final two outs and did just that.

After putting runners in scoring position and failing to break through in the first two innings, Ole Miss grabbed the lead in the third. Gillespie got the inning rolling in a thunderous manner, squaring up a pitch and sending a no-doubt shot way over the left field fence. Not long after, Gabby Alvarez tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly to right, giving Abbey Latham just enough time to scoot home.

UAB threatened to cut into the Rebel lead in the fourth, starting the frame with back-to-back singles. However, Diederich bounced back nicely to keep the Blazers in check, inducing a pair of pop ups before finishing out the inning with a strikeout.

After cruising through the first five innings, Diederich ran into some trouble in the sixth. Following a strikeout of the leadoff batter, the sophomore surrendered a pair of singles and a three-run home run in consecutive at-bats, allowing the Blazers to tie the game at three runs apiece. Borgen came in out of the bullpen and stopped the bleeding, collecting two quick outs to retire the side.

Both teams went down in order in the seventh, sending the game into extra frames with the international tiebreaker rule in affect.

Ole Miss regained the lead on Allees RBI double to the right-center gap, plating pinch runner Kacey Hvitved from 3rd. The Rebels went on to tack on a run of insurance as Puk dropped a bloop single to center field, scoring Allee.

However, the lead would not hold as a pair of errors in the home half allowed UAB to tie the game. With still just one out on the board and the winning run at third, Borgen got out of the jam with a pop up to second and a liner to left, keeping the game alive.

Mikayla Allee roped a clutch two-out RBI single to center field to reclaim the lead for Ole Miss in the ninth but with a runner starting in scoring position, the Blazers were able to utilize small ball to bring in the tying run without a hit.

After Puk delivered a sacrifice fly in the 10th to push the Rebels in front again, Latham drove a frozen rope over the left field wall for a two-run shot, pushing the lead to 9-6. The Blazers fought back once again, though, scoring a run on a fielder's choice and tying the game on Analyse Petree's two-run homer to left.

Ole Miss regained the lead in the 11th on a throwing error but missed the opportunity to add on with the bases loaded. UAB tied the game in the bottom half on a bases-loaded walk but Tillmann got three outs with the bases loaded to avoid the walk off and send the game in to the 12th.

The Rebels once again took a commanding lead in the 13th thanks to Gillespie's RBI double and Latham's second dinger of the game, a three-run shot to center field. UAB was able to scratch across one run in the home half and load the bases but Jacobsen came out of the 'pen to slam the door shut.

Ole Miss returns to Mary Bowers Field on Sunday to finish out the Blazer Classic, battling Louisiana in a rematch at 11 a.m. CT.
