Ole Miss Finishes Blazer Classic with 3-2 Weekend Record
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – An early deficit proved too much to overcome for Ole Miss on Sunday as the Rebels closed out the Blazer Classic with an 8-1 loss to No. 11 Louisiana at Mary Bowers Field.
Anna Borgen took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in one third of an inning. Lindsey Johnson made her Rebel debut and ate up some innings, pitching 4.0 in relief with four runs surrendered on two hits and seven walks, striking out three. Ava Tillmann came out of the bullpen for 1.2 scoreless innings, while Taylor Bachmeyer made her debut in the circle
Louisiana (10-3) got off to a quick start, stringing together three doubles and a single to plate three runs in the top of the first inning. Johnson came on in relief with one out down and got out of the frame with no further damage, picking up a strikeout and a fielder's choice up the middle.
The Ragin' Cajuns tacked on two more in the second, with Kaitlyn Alderink taking home plate on a delayed steal before Sarah Hudek drove an RBI single through the right side. The next inning, Louisiana added another without a hit, taking advantage of an error to score a run via a sacrifice fly.
The first hit of the game got the Rebels (5-10) on the board as Jessica Puk turned on a pitch and blasted a no-doubt solo home run to left field, the second dinger of the season for the junior.
The momentum was short lived for Ole Miss as Louisiana struck back for a pair of runs in the next half inning. Melissa Mayeaux got the first run home in the inning with an RBI double, scoring later on via a single through the left side by Alderink.
Ole Miss shut down the Cajuns defense for the final two innings but was unable to get its own bats going, falling to Louisiana for the second time in as many days.
