Back-to-Back Bombs in the Sixth Propel Rebels to Victory
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss scrapped its way out of an early hole on Tuesday, charging back to defeat North Alabama 6-2 at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
Molly Jacobsen was awarded the win, allowing a pair of runs on two hits in a complete game effort, striking out four along the way.
The Rebels' 3-7 hitters did the work offensively, with Jessica Puk, Abbey Latham, Paige Smith, Sydney Gutierrez and MIkayla Allee combining for all of Ole Miss' seven hits in the affair, taking four for extra bases.
The Lions (9-5) got off to a quick start, taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning on Meleah Hargett's solo home run to right-center. Hargett used her speed and hustle to extend the lead in the fourth, scoring all the way from second on a deep fly in foul territory.
Soon after, the Rebs (6-10) started to mount a comeback. Paige Smith halved the deficit in the bottom half of the fourth, shooting a single up the middle to bring Katelin Cooper in from second. Sydney Gutierrez followed with a double in the left-center gap, scoring Taylor Bachmeyer to tie the game.
After a quiet fifth frame, Ole Miss returned with the noise in the sixth. After an Autumn Gillespie walk and a Puk single, Abbey Latham parked a tank in center field, pushing the Rebels ahead with a three-run bomb. Paige Smith made it back-to-back jacks during the next at-bat, going opposite field and over the wall. In no time, the 2-2 tie had become a 6-2 Rebel advantage.
With a lead in tow, Jacobsen came back out to the circle and collected the three necessary outs, capping the comeback over the Lions.
