Rebels Unable to Hold off Razorbacks in SEC Opener on Friday
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The red-hot No. 24 Ole Miss women's tennis team was quieted Friday, falling 4-3 to Arkansas in their SEC opener at Billingsley Tennis Center in Fayetteville.
The Rebels (8-3, 0-1 SEC) headed into singles with the advantage, after the senior duo of Tereza Janatova and Anna Vrbenska won 6-3, and the pairing of junior Sabina Machalova and senior Alexa Bortles clinched the point, winning 6-4 over the No. 22 ITA ranked duo of Lauren Alter and Tatum Rice.
Arkansas (6-3, 1-0 SEC) evened the contest with a two-set win on Court 5. Vrbenska soon answered for Ole Miss as she delivered a decisive two-setter of her own, 6-4, 6-3, and improved her dual record to 8-2 on the season.
The Razorbacks were quick to tie the match again with a victory on Court 1 as the theme of two-setters continued. Bortles gave Ole Miss its final lead after claiming the first set, 6-4 and finished the second set with a successful tiebreak, 7-6.
Freshman Victoire de Samucewicz nearly earned her first SEC win in her league debut. A product of Paris, France, de Samucewicz dropped the first, but battled back to force a third set. Laura Rijkers of Arkansas held tough and posted a 6-3 win to tie the match up once more.
As with the previous match, the deciding factor came down to Janatova, who led in her opening set 4-1, taking it 6-3 before falling in the second set 5-7 to enter into a third and final set to decide the contest. The finale would be tied as late as 4-4 before Rice would claim the last two games and snap the Rebels' four-match winning streak.
