Rebels Open Home SEC Play with 4-1 Win over Kentucky
3/1/2020 | Women's Tennis
Senior Alexa Bortles earns her fifth-straight victory Sunday
OXFORD, Miss. – On a beautiful afternoon at Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center, No. 24 Ole Miss Women's Tennis picked up its first win in conference action, taking down Kentucky 4-1 Sunday. The Rebels move to 9-3 on the spring, while Kentucky slips to 8-5.
Senior Anna Vrbenska clinched the match, continuing her impressive SEC record, with just five conference losses in three seasons.
Classmate Alexa Bortles was also successful, picking up her fifth consecutive singles victory and her second ranked win in as many chances. Bortles moved with relative ease, downing the Wildcats' No. 92 Carlota Molina 6-2, 6-3, leading the entire match.
Ole Miss headed into singles with the advantage, thanks to the veteran pairings of Bortles and junior Sabina Machalova and Vrbenska and classmate Tereza Janatova, who each cruised through their matches, allowing just one game in 6-1 finishes.
Freshman Kelsey Mize registered the first singles win for the Rebs, taking down Court 5 6-4, 6-3 and putting Ole Miss up 2-0.
After Bortles won to put the Rebels just one point away, Kentucky threatened, picking up a win on Court 6.
Things still looked promising for Ole Miss, with Janatova looking to force a third set and Machalova just beginning hers when Vrbenska clinched.
The Rebels have now won back-to-back meetings in Oxford over the Wildcats, who entered Sunday No. 39 in the ITA rankings.
